ok, so every christmas we discuss going some place new on summer break, this year the kids 18 & 16 said Montana or Alaska. Any thoughts on these or other great locations? cost and time are always factors.

Have you ever done Wyoming? Was there in Sept. so much to see and do Yellowstone, Tetons, Togwotee, Devils Tower, Cody area is beautiful.

Bonneville salt flats, during speed week in August. Casino right in Wendover,Utah which is where you stay. We actually made this trip in 2011 drove thru Sturgis during bike week, saw Mt Rushmore, drove around black hills, spent the night
In Casper,Wyoming. The next day we visited the old Wyoming prison, then drove on to Toole, Utah and spent the night. Next two days we were on the salt, then we left for pikes peak outside Denver and back to Michigan. Any automobile or
motorcycle enthusiast should go at least once. The salt flats are 1/3 of the size they were 50 years ago. You can go to the SCTA website to read about the racing......i would love to go back

assume u have done the black hills but if not.
I could deff always spend a few days in the hills .
I vote for renting a RV doing the hills then rolling through the big horns in to red loge then the bear tooth highway to Yellowstone

An Alaskan cruise is on my list of things to do. Black Hills is a fav too! I've done the rv rental deal and had a blast.

My parents are going to AK this coming summer. Everyone that they know has advised them to go without a budget and stay twice as long as they can. They are looking at two weeks now.

don't do the cruse . just fly up rent a car charter a few planes charter a few boats .I was fortunate enough to spend almost every summer up there as a kid. back in the day when most of my dads buds had planes and never had a pilots license lol. spent time all over that state. he had a bud in a homestead deep in the woods no power refrigeration is a 30 gal drum dropped down to perma frost. tons of dogs his bud who was a Iditarod racer. I usually spent a week there every summer. the 4th with kids sledding family's grilling behind the tourist ponds at glacier park prob not getting away with that one any more lol.
checking out bears on Kodiak checking out polar bears at the dump only place I have seen them.
watching RV s washed out to sea in homer when the tourist park a mile from the water and go fishing for the day and don't see the heavy posted beware of tide every place. tons of crazy stuff always afraid if I go again now it could not live up to my past experiences.
the old man lives in N MN now but still has a place in homer and a shack in sheep creek . I am sure they are going to pot. sure I will have to go up and deal with those sooner than later. wife really wants to go but she wont get in a small plane ? and now gets sea sick. yeah stick with Florida

Head to Kentucky/Tennesee and rent a houseboat. Take a Mammoth Cave tour on the way there.Let the kids bring a friend along or better yet share with another family.

Capt FatDaddy has a nice ring to it.

Agreed. Love that area. And in addition to the beautiful countryside, you can spend days just checking out everything in Nashville. We're looking to retire in the Cumberland river area.

That is on our list to do. Split a house boat with a couple other families, tow a ski boat behind the house boat for recreation. Plus the crappie are the size of footballs.

My parents have a place south of Land Between the Lakes, but I've yet to make it down there.

What do the kids enjoy doing? Some of my favorite vacations are when we went to northern Minnesota and camped on an island on Lake Kabetogema for a week. Enjoyed great fishing when we wanted to do that, and you could hop in the boat in the morning and cruise the shoreline and bays all day and never get tired of the scenery and wildlife.

If you are looking for a place further away, I really liked my week trip to Tybee Island just outside of Savannah, GA a few years ago. Rented a lake house for the week and spent most days on the beach or walking around historic Savannah.
