Where is your favorite place to camp?

Our family favorite is the Big Eau Pleine County Park in southern Marathon County, WI. It has good size sites, well wooded, electric hook-up on about half of the sites, miles of gravel trails for walking or biking, nice park area with shelter, playground. It does not have very good fishing, and although it has a nice beach, the water gets to green to have very good swimming. So if the water is not that important to you, this is a really nice place to camp.

We are going to try Copper Falls State Park in Septmber.

Indian mounds campground on Lake Tomahawk (Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest) is where we go. We grew up going to clear Lake as kids just down the road but with a bigger boat now and better fishing it's nice to be on Lake Tomahawk.

You'll love Copper Falls, never stayed there but we took a day trip there while we were up camping. Never had a chance to get back yet, I guess I need more vacations.:)

Lake Gogebic State Park or McClane (spelling?) north of Houghton, I like the state parks and these two have been aweful good to us.

McLain State Park on M203 north of Hancock. Grandparents lived in Laurium and as a little girl we went there and I played on the swings, slides and on the beach. When I got married we camped there. Now my daughter/son-in-law and grandchildren go there every year and the kids love it, they do not want to go anywhere else. I can remember when there were more camp sites and a bigger picnic and beach area. Unfortunately the storms of November have taken their toll as so much of the park was washed away.

McCarthy Beach State Park in Minnesota. Great boating, Fishing, Sandy Beach, Activities for the kids, etc. Go once a year for a few days.

I'll second Indian Mounds, it is a great campground. I also love Razorback lake, near Sayner.

They aren't your typical "campgrounds", but my personal favorites are the Sturgeon River Gorge and High Rock Bay. Keystone bay was really great, until the owner gated it and the DNR started giving out tickets.

McLaine State Park is number one to my family. Brimely is second where you can watch the big ships go by everyday.

We really like Willow River State Park in Hudson, WI. But we also love all the MN state parks on the North Shore. Don't camp in them as much as we used to since we built a cabin up there. This weekend we are going to Jay Cooke State Park near Cloquet. It's only 10 miles from home but it's my son's 8th birthday so he has 3 friends coming with also. Should be interesting.

^^^^^^^^ I've seen your boat pictures, that's not camping! LOL

If I have to fire up the generator then it's camping. This internet on the boat is laim, so that makes it camping, lol. I can't believe I got to get up in 4 1/2 hrs. to run a fund raiser for the eagle riders breakfast. proceeds go to cancer research. I really need a job. not. Since I am "Off topic rambling" I hope all is doing well and having a decent start of summer! I actually tent camp about once a yr. rough in it up. lol. okay fgsacts keep out of this one, satin sheets were not my idea of roughing it. But they sure were nice.

Does a refrigerator box count? How about 4 dining room chairs and a big blanket over the top? Sorry just some childhood flashbacks.

Good one snowmonkey!

Or how about that tree house made from half rotted 2x4's and plywood and like 10,000 nails!

We built one in a big old willow in our backyard. Dad found out and told us it did not look safe, so he proceeded to take it down. About 4 hours and 3 lbs of sweat later the last board came down and when he was finished, chuckled and admitted it was probably safe after all!

The good ol' days!

That is hillarious!!

I made the mistake of showing the kids that trick. Needless to say, the dining room is now Camp Lindsey and Michael!

On a non-thread jacking note...

We always seem to go to the same fail safe places. I am curious to any suggestions in the northern lower that aren't state campgrounds. I'm always leary to try the unknown when it comes to campgrounds.

I like full hookup, decent size spaces and plenty for the kids to do onsite. Cheap is always nice too!

Thanks!

Since you are from Waterford, have you tried Groveland Oaks off of Dixie Hwy? How about a Jellystone Park somewhere in the northern lower, or Mackinaw City Campgrounds (lots of sites/things for kids to do/plus see the brdige light up in the evening...........just a thought

Try the dubay campground just down the road from eau plain park. It's part of the Wisconsin River system. Great fishing and just about all water sports. Try the Portage County web site for details.

Groveland Oaks is close, but too close, if you know what I mean. The kids love the Jellystone in Grayling and we're heading there Thursday for the weekend. I would like to try someplace in Mackinaw City but the ones "in town" seem a little cheesy. If you know of something out where the busses don't run, let me know.

Thanks!!!
