Made one trip up to the U.P this year. Only rideable weekend in December. Snow was okay, it was good just to get on the sled and ride. Mosquito Inn was great. Had about everything on the menu. Make sure you hit them up if your in the Houghton area!!!

Trying to make another trip up. Looking to time the trip with a major snowfall and am not having any luck. Every time I check the weather their is a possibility of big snow and it fizzels out. Sorry to be rambling just needed to vent some frustration.

On a positive note Heath Frisby front flip Sunday night? Are you kidding me??

Yep-I feel your pain. Made a sled trip to the UP the weekend after New Years. All in all it was ok considering it was in the upper 40's and sunny both Thursday and Friday. I was also up over New Years (unfortunately didn't get a chance to ride), and they got pounded with snow that weekend (to the tune of about 20"). I figured we were in great shape for the following weekend. Well by the time we hit the trails 3 days later, the conditions went from great early in the week to average at best. By the end of the weekend, they were toast. I couldn't believe in that short period of time, how fast they fell apart. Alot of traffic coupled with the warm weather and WHAM it's over. Now with good conditions up north, my kid is in a basketball tourney someplace in the state every weekend now through the end of February. My weekends are tied up (I'm not complaining as we really enjoy the tournaments, and before you know it, they are grown and gone, so I cherish this time of my life), but dang, I still like to get out and play with my friends too, and mother nature is being a fickle ornary hag this winter. My only hope is to get out and ride here in Central Wisconsin. The thing is, everytime we get some snow, it warms up in the next day or two, the snow melts, and we basically have to start from scratch. I'm thinking my 300 mile weekend a few weeks back might be all I get in this year. I guess the focus now turns to the Harley. I'm writing this year off!!

Are there good trail systems down there? This is getting to the point of being ridiculous. With Quads at least you can pick a weekend a month away and no matter what happens you know your still going to go and be able to ride........

Just depressed would never give up the Sleds........

I hear what your saying. Ive been snowmobiling forever, wouldn't think about giving it up, yet. I save all my vacation time for the winter, but this sport is so dependent on the weather Ive learned not to put all my vacation apples in one basket. We have a snomo trip coming up and hope to do one more. But if the weather does not cooperate, rather than ride crappy conditions, we'll load up the bicycles and head somewhere warm. If life gives you lemons...

"If life gives you lemons..."

make ya some lemonade...but I sure hope I'm sitting next to the guy that life gave vodka to! :) (or something like that from Ron White)

Last season we kept waiting for the snow too - just knowing it was gonna come! And, like Noodles said, it DID a few weeks ago! No complaints about where we ride...but sure do feel sorry for E UP, all of the lower and all but some spots for WI! :(

Not sure if others keep track of their miles at the end of the season. I log mine on the inside of a cabinet in the garage each year. I was looking back to recent years and the winter of 06-07 shows I only rode 200 miles for the season. That was probably a one day ride. I'm beginning to think that this year may be the first that I don't log one mile due to work schedules and lack of snow.

Of course all of this depends on one's location, weather patterns, etc. Last year was probably a 9 on the 1 - 10 Scale for most of Wisconsin, what a contrast from one winter to the next.

Don't get me started. When I first discovered sledding in '04 I thought "We'll this is awesome. You just go up and ride. Gonna own one of these things one day!" It was so deep those first few years, I would curse like a sailor because I was always getting stuck, no joke. I just thought this place pumped snow constantly for 4 months a year. It was not until several years in I realized I was taking it for granted. Then, a few trips would coincide with warmups, I would write it off as bad luck. '08 was insanely deep. '09 we rode on dirt for several miles. Last year I could not get anyone to go with me after being hosed the year before. Now, less than 2 weeks out from our annual 2 day trip and I find myself pouring over every word of Johns forecast, hoping for something encouraging. Surreal feeling.

I guess I'm confused. I've been here the past 4 weeksn in Ishpeming and had perfect trails. Snow depth is significantly more than last year at this time but I suppose we get these threads every year.

*edit* yellow indicates 20-30" depth

I think what everyone means, at least myself, is it would be nice to ride the trails closer to home too. Plus if we have snow south, traffic thins out up north. We have a trip soon, and from what Ive heard its even getting busy during the week up there. Lots of people dropping and riding where the good snow starts. It sounds like we'll be slapping skis with tons of traffic.

I'd agree with that, saw tons of people today. I'll just leave the depth graphic up for people to reference easily - got nothing better to do since I ran my chaincase dry today.... if anyone passed by Negaunee today you might have seen me waiting for the trialer to show up lol.

"Made one trip up to the U.P this year." Waaaaaaaaa - the only thing I get to do is sit on my sled & make engine noises. At least you got to ride. :(

Made 3 trips to the U.P. this year and got 2 more yet. There's snow, you just gotta drive to find it. Totally worth it in the end...

I'm frustrated in the fact that the snow storms seem to be few and far between. I know there is snow on the trails. I'm sure there great. I'm not going to spend $600 for 3 days to go share the same trails with 3,000 other riders.
I'm frustrated to the fact that it is getting harder and harder to plan a trip around a big storm.
