gun violence

I'm not an educated man and I certainly don't know what the answer is.

One issue that seems to be a glaringly obvious problem to my feeble mind, is the fact that the government, news media, and Hollywood are all THE SAME THING in this country! Until we fix that, I fear it will be business as usual in America.

Business as usual seems to = Skate around the real issues, and try to figure a way to profit from them. All anybody seems to care about is making a buck these days. Greed, plain and simple, is the number one contributor to the demise of American society.

No question about it! Your mind is far from feeble!!

This afternoon, my daughter called and asked if I could go pick up my grandson from kindergarten and of course I did.

As I walked up to the school the door was locked and a "person" stood guard at the door which was a NEW event since the CT shooting. Of course this was at school let out time and I was not alone in going to pick the boy up, as other parents were doing the same thing.

When the door swung open, TEN PEOPLE WALKED IN altogether. It was cold I had a good coat on. NO ID...no nothin...I was then INSIDE the school and was told to "go give picture I.D. to the office...down thadaway...."

It became very clear that this was a "look'n good" process and nothing more. Had I had a weapon....I was free to roll!

Some just don't get it.... not even now! But don't yah know that more firearm legislation is in the works.....that will be the ticket...you betcha!

I don't have the answers to all these problems, but I do know what's going on around me. My wife was a teacher in the inner city of Chicago for 14 years. Cops are assigned to most of these schools. My kids go to school in Plainfield IL. The chief if police, a few months ago, wanted ar15's locked up in each school because he wanted the beat cop well equipped for that God forbid situation. This made the news for about 10 minutes .

The fact is ,cops are already in the schools. Out in the great suburbs, the head cops were asking for more fire power. This was happening ,well before the 20 kids were killed! Before you slam me for wear I live, you're right this will never happen where you live???

In order to get "more firepower" in schools, don't we have to get rid of the "no firearms" law on the books NOW? I believe that was the primary intent of the law that Michigan just passed in both houses, but the Governor just veto'd .....I expect that he would have signed that law had the CT murderer not done his thing...so it became a political hot potato. Interestingly enough, Tennessee picked up the Michigan would be law, and is now ramming that legislation thru so the Governor can sign it.

This just diminished my respect for politicians all the more...what is "politically correct" trumps, common sense....again!

I'm surprised they didn't tar and feather the guy for wanting guns in school, he probably did get death threats from some.

I've been sitting on the sidelines reading all this and feel there are some very intelligent people with my same beliefs writing so I am not going to duplicate what they have said. What I will say is my guns must also be broken as they have not harmed anyone. In addition I have had my CPL since it was legalized but have only carried a handful of times, mostly because my handguns are not conducive to CC. Today I am going out to buy a handgun more conducive to CC, if I can find one as it seems many are doing the same. I will start carrying as often as I can where ever it is legal and god help anyone that tries to harm innocent people in my presence.

Finally...my heart goes out to all the families and friends of those in Newtown that were gunned down in cold blood by what can only be described as a nut case.

Lenny,if I recall ,the police chief wanted ar15s locked up in different areas of the school. This made national news. Most of the complaints came from people that don't live anywhere near Plainfield . The only ones with the keys would be the cops.

yup and for the ones that are not life threatening, a good old fashion arm bar or leg lock will submit them. I hate to watch how people do nothing when someone is getting harassed or beat up, people just sit and say nothing, do nothing. I'm not talking grown men who are somewhat equal but the innocent people getting preyed upon.

Hey,, on a bright note now, we are going Christmas caroling and gonna spread good cheer to the neighborhood!!

I don't agree with the term "gun violence". Guns are merely tools to kill people, much like drugs, alcohol, cars, knives, fires, etc....you never here those terms.....the gun doesn't shoot itself, a preson pulls the trigger. A car doesn't decide to drive headon into another vehicle, the driver drives into the path. Knives don't fling themselves at people, people stab and cut, drugs don't inject or ingest themselves, people inject and ingest by choice.....blah blah blah....There shouldn't even be a need for "gun control". How about "people control". Our society allows this behavior without proper punishment or consequences. It's all about personal choices..inanimate objects don't make choices, people make choices!

Here is an interesting read on Australian Firearms History: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_politics_in_Australia

While the press has bantered how "safe" it is in Australia since 1997 and when Australia became the worlds toughest place to own a firearm, please read down to some details in the above article where the country now has only 5% owning a firearm.

In short since the heavy restrictions went into effect, crime has gone up...2002 to 2003 murders/violent crimes shot up 42% and now many crimes and deaths are by knives rather than firearms.

It is well worth the read to see what "happened" because the leaders of that nation decided that firearms should NOT be the right of the people to own.

Of course Australia is a highly socialized country and even though the country was concerned about being able to defend itself against foreign invasion.....they don't seemed too worried about it any more.

Maybe Australia's problem dates back to its settlement by the British (from Wikipedia):
"Australia's eastern half was claimed by Great Britain in 1770 and settled through penal transportation to the colony of New South Wales from 26 January 1788."

Personally, I'm grateful that Nash is a spelling guru.....using this word's antonym would give the sentence quite an interesting meaning!

Merry Christmas, everyone.
