Hailstorm!

Wow!

This morning around 1:15am or so we all were immediately awaken by
an amazing brief hail storm that came through the Peshtigo area.
I am talking. HOLY COW! The House was shaking, and we had to hollar
in order to talk to each other. The dog was freaking out,.... Wife turned on
the yard lights and WOW! Talk about coming down! Quarter size hail just
bursting from the skies piling up on the ground. The entire yard looked as
if there was enough to go sledding!. Lightning,...It was crazy!
I just watched the weather at 10pm,... they never even said anything about
rain??? ***?? I have never witnessed such a violent event in all my 53 years.
Really. It was that intense. And just like that,... bye bye. Over and gone.
This morning as I waddled to the kitchen with my crutch (new hip) I see
a deck with a LOT of "dirt" on it (shingle debris) I am almost afraid to check
the roof out. That baby has got to last me at least 2 more years,....
Or (1) lottery winning anyway.

Wonder how the car lots faired??

Think * Snow!

Insurance man for the roof!

Hailstorms are usually so isolated, that if someone didn't have their cell phone out, nobody hears about it except for the people under the stones!

OUCH!

xcr440: Well, You can bet I'll be taking a spin to see da man in a bit.
backside of the house's roof looks like the Hatfields and McCoy's were
shooting at it!
and the West side of Both Garages has siding damage.
My Dad's new Motor home had EVERYTHING plastic on the roof
just shredded.
Amazing.

Always something.

Don't let the insurance company talk you into replacing only a portion of the roof. They will.

Well,...

The American Family Guy was Here at 7:50am,...
It is 9:45 am and He just got done walking around the roof.
He was circling stuff on my garage I couldn't even see,...
but when it came to the house,...
The contractors used a wood fiber based shingle it looks like instead of
a fiber glass asphalt one on the detached garage. I thought they were
the same. Duh.
I guess the 25-30 year life span of the house shingles at 12years sure didn't
hold out. I am afraid of what the estimate is going to look like.
When we had the house roofed back then, it was our hopes to have it
last at least 18 to 20 years and then have it done once more for OUR last
time anyway. (Bend Over)
Oh well.
Holding my breath.

Get back later,....
Always something.

Ouch!

Replacement Cost Value to fix all damage: 16 grand,...
Uhm,...I will be generous sir and put down 67% life used up,...
here is your check for 6600 bones.

Estimate to replace house roof alone,..probably around 8300 bones,..
Merry Christmas and Happy Hailstorm to me. :)

Better hope the Hip heals up good,.. so I can get in some overtime next year!
and the existing roof will last til spring. Yippee Kie Yay!

I Hope Home Depot and or Menards has matching siding pieces,... to piece out,...
Gotta love depreciation costs, ect,....

Could have it worse. Stuff happens. Smile.
Moving on to the next item,....

Dad,...
My car sounds kinda funny,...
:)

Sounds like quite the storm that rolled through. Curious why or how you ended up with an ACV policy in this day and age.

Is the insurance company depreciating until the repairs are made and then settle for the balance, or is $6,600 the limit of your claim?

Good luck!

Great question my friend,

Call it BigVin stupidity I guess.
Put it this way,... At least the kid was nice enough to pull out and "yellow out" that part of the
policy and said,..."When the new roof is installed, call your agent, tell him him to REMOVE this (yellowed out)
endorsement number,... and the next time you have hail damage or a tornado or whatever rolls through,
you won't get it in the shorts like this.
Hmmmmmmm.
There are other things on there though that once they get completed, I can send in the receipts along with
pictures of the work and get reimbursed for some of the costs.
I guess for a 12 year old roof that got trashed, it's better than nothing.
I know ONE thing from a while back. I definately have the correct Sump Pump policy!!!!!
Live and Learn!

The money has to go to the Bank (who holds the mortgage,... and we can only pull it out when the work is done!)
So we don't go blow it at the Casino of course, and leave the roof trashed.

Glad I don't have my neighbors house! His is gonna be some Big Bucks!

Now where did I put my Tylenol?

sounds like BS to me
in my parts I have not seen that happen
call your agent and a roofing contractor over to the house.
and BTW if the siding cant be replace to match perfectly They have to replace the whole house that is the way it is
6600 dont cash it!

That all depends on your policy. I am getting a roof put on tomorrow due to hail storm. Insurance paying for all of it less deductible. Neighbor's policy specifically deducts for depreciation. Seems like a crock to me. If they won't replace all it seems you are only partially insured

ok but what about the siding part?
I get the roof even though it is BS and I can believe it from American family and that is why I would have a contractor come out with my agent . contractor to verify your situation.
the siding part is a completely diff situation agent to be on your side agent more likely to be your advocate to the corp than a corp adjuster .
if he has dented or busted siding that can not be matched they have to buy him the whole house.
u cant get a house sided for 6600.
how about dents in screens ? dents an A/C unit ?dents on fascia?
dents on any vents? the adjusters job is to get u to take as little as possible.
I have dealt with many over the yrs some are good some take pride on just how big of a banana they can stick to the home owner. remember the don't work for u.
and dump American family as soon as this is done. better get new coverage now before this came shows up in the system and then dump American family

His agent sold him the policy, which I find appalling. I have dealt with these situations, large scale damage & it should not be going this way. The only out of pocket expense he should have is his deductible in a typical situation. The company sends their adjuster, or an independent adjuster, their job is suppose to be to verify the extent of the damage & mitigate the cost within reason. However, there are those that are there to save the company $, this is obviously the case here. I would depart this company as soon as you can get the roof replaced.-Mezz

All plastic crap siding fades and expands/shrinks over time, south and west facing sides more than non sunny sides. Your house will look like a patch job if you piece in new siding strips with the old.

I have Hardie Board on my house. I don't care how much more it costs but I will never put plastic siding on any house I ever own.

That's a big 10-4!

Ezra, Ya know what he wrote up about the siding? Since it only damaged the same side of the
2 garages,....
And it is the "Common White Standard Vinyl",...
Re-Do the House side and save the good pieces to "fix" the damaged ones on the
detached garage side.
Guess it makes sense in saving them money, but sounds like a lot of fixing around stuff?
You actually really have to go right up to it and look at it to notice it,.. but hey,.. its there!!

Yeah,... After I do my Voting here in a bit,... going to stop by my agent and have a talk.
He will get to the bottom of it. Been a long time friend, and really has helped us out in the
past with other stuff. Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if HE feels bad, and calls one of his
other insurance buds to get me a better deal.

We did make out on the camper damage. (oh boy!)
They were there for us back in 07 when my sled blew up in Twin Lakes at the BP station Pumps,...
Guess I have to read "between the lines" better.
But man,... It seems like Everyone can easily become insurance poor.
Danged if ya do, Danged if ya don't

Thanks for the input my friends.
It opens a lot of questions to look at.

feel bad for your predicament.
I personally think American family is a total rip off.
I just changed our home owners insurance and auto ins. on two vehicles. my home owners went from a $1004 a year to $475 a year. never ever had a single claim in ten years with American. that is saving me $90 a month on my mortgage, $1080 a year.

the two vehicles I am saving almost $1000 a year after dumping American family.
The independent contractor I went thru who said flat out they are the most expensive insurer in the country and the majority of his clients come to sever ties with American family. I knew I'd save some money but didn't think it would be 2 grand a year.

sorry for veering off topic but after this you should really look around I'm so glad I did.
good luck.

hold on bigvin and ez..its am fam..unless its ag policy..its not ACV..they rarely write them..i think hes just confused about ACV vs RCV..vin call your agent..all that money will come back when the work is done...unless they wrote your policy with a bad roof..did you just buy it? they could have excluded it....

POLARISDAN

and 2 years ago matching policy became a rider with amfam...and most agents are too stupid to write it for their clients..its like 14$ a month..so dam frustrating..so vin ask your agent if u have the matching rider..and let us know if ur acv or rcv..

Brothers~

Here is da scoop. Call it bad luck,.. or whatever,...
Back in 2012, I received a letter from the corporate office (or whatever) saying they were doing random
audits of their loyal customers (oh boy!) and hey!,... I WAS SELECTED!
Well,... One day, I got another letter (after they visited) (while we were away) and found that,....
Mr. BigVin,... You better put an 8' lockable fence up around the other half of your above ground pool,...
or we will not cover you! Mr. BigVin,... Your roof is cupping on the ends and you need to replace it or it
will not be covered under current policy conditions,....
So,...
Just so happens my Agent pulls up almost as I am reading MY letter, with HIS letter, and says HUH???
He actually takes photos of these things and gets ahold of corporate and tells them they are crazy,....
or whatever they say to their bosses. Anyway,... They back off. BUT,... in one of those nice packets they
send every year (that one NEVER reads) that just reviews your policy and bla bla bla,...
They (in nice little letters) state that if the work isn't done that was stated in the original audit, it would revert
to a ACV in case of a claim against the policy after a certain date,...ect.,....
That certain date just happened to be 6 weeks BEFORE the damage!
Yippee!
And the pool,.. I didn't care about, because that was trashed in the spring due to frost and we had
already removed it. But the roof,... Well. Ya almost need a lawyer to read that stuff to make it make sense.
So,... this spring, when the new one goes on, I have to make sure that the ACV is taken OFF the policy.
IF,... I still have them for the House or whatever. The wife and I will be shopping.
Just the way the check bounces I guess.
Long story longer,....
Because I know enough NICE folks out there, I may end up with a nice roof with out too much damage out of
the pocketbook. The siding and stuff will get done as I can get at it.
Live and learn.
Thanks for all the insight my friends, AND letting me vent :)

~Vin

Boy is it snowing out!
maybe my roof will cave in!
