I use them. HOWEVER I don't get it when people use them at night.
1. I can barely see your hands let alone how many fingers you have up
2. The headlights is enought of a heads up!

I like the feeling of open season racing it gives me when I see the swiper giving the Black Power sign. Don't really care for the numbers in the middle those are usually newbies who should just hang on.

I now ride with the red/green light thingy (not) and a newly installed backup camera (not).

I do use the hand signals but when appropriate. But I've want to look in to one of these two options:
A number system
A color system

Both have good points and bad, what would be cool is if either could use GPS to tell your direction of travel and the use radio waves to auto sync once in a certain distant from other sleds. If another group came up behind you it would renumber or change color appropriately.

I would much rather have people stick up a hand than to be focusing on a GPS unit all the time. People here can't drive with cell phones and I see this going the same direction.

NOW HERE IS AN IDEA. Someone should invent a hands free thing for a snowmobile helmet with a voice to tell you how many sleds are coming at you or are behind you.... or a walkie talky thing where everyone shares the same frequency.

that would add another thousand bucks to the cost of the already over priced sleds.

Sure that's what we all need fighterpilot visor with targets ahead & behind or numbers being buzzed in your ear.

Very True!

When I wrote that I was thinking of a GPS that would only be internal something that would just pick up movement in a direction, so you could pass sleds in the oppose direction. Now the Radio type of thing works and is out there. But people have to have them and be on the same channel. I have a Collett Communicators And when on the main channel I have picked up other groups and its been nice.

This is available too I look for the link but could not find it. I think Lenny posted it last year.

You should start a followup poll for those who DON'T use hand signals.

Riding preference:
1. Mostly Trail
2. Trail/Off-Trail mix
3. Mostly Off-Trail

I think we'd find the majority that vote #3.

I think the people in category 3 use a different set of hand signals when in the woods. I also would beg to differ that the people in this category use the proper hand signals more often than the others.

I'm using hand signals when off trail especially.... Pointing out stumps, culverts, DNR ( LOL ),I want to share what I come up on in the snow with those behind me.

As the poll is showing most use some form of hand signals when they can. Use them under control & are helpful. I like to know how many are coming at me & does draw attention to oncoming traffic all good things. Those that can't ride 1 handed should forget it & there are ill handling sleds out there so rather you keep your hands on bars than veer accross trail for a hand signal.

I agreee with this completely, but generally these are not the "traditional" hand signals they teach new riders these days. Or at least the ones I suspect we are "polling" for usage.

Of course, only use signals when you can safely.

I'll tell you what, maybe we need to get the state involved to put up traffic lights for you people, warning lights, maybe best yet a center divider....rofl. Maybe the feds can send some cash this way also for experimental gps controlled sleds, you could never make a mistake than. I can totally understand you guys not having the ability to understand what's happening around you. I can understand you needing help to make it down the trail safely. I'd probably put throttle stops on your flippers, turn signals, back up camera's, horns. I think 3-4 airbags will suit your needs also. What else do you need to FEEL safe, How about some counseling for encouragement, after all, the risks your taking is quite hazardous and that is not emotional healthy.

Seems it just rubs many of you the wrong way that not everyone will signal you. It has been stated on here that we should all do one or the other, kinda like mandatory health care which by the way was judged unconstitutional.

Not one of you can tell me of a negative experience you had because someone didn't signal you. Most of you jumped on a sled one day, flew down the trail and seen fingers flying and just started doing it without thinking it was necessary or not so it has become habit, bad habits are hard to stop, kinda like smoking,,, he he he.

Seriously, I don't care if you signal or not, I prefer not to even in the safest conditions. I think it's best to learn the skills yourself rather than having someone do it for you.

I hope the nice color and font gives you a warm good feeling, It cn HELP you to feel safe, you never know when that mouse could slip off next to your keyboard and bang your ankle

That's great, Lenny! Using hand signals, in my opinion, is similar to waving people through a stop sign........you're trusting someone else.

There's really no need for signals at all; simply ride as if there's always someone coming.........and guess what, eventually all the sleds will pass from the group that you're currently passing. Essentially, hand signals are really an indication to each in the group to drive differently (faster) once the final sled passes. Should we be doing that, or driving as if someone's always around the next corner? Keep your hands on the bar.

my analogies may be a bit harsh people, I should have toned it back a bit.

We wave people through stop signs also...

but everyone stops and makes sure. Stupid...maybe. To me it helps ME look twice or three times before I go knowing I'm "looking out for someone else behind me." (if that makes sense...in my mind it does).

Thanks,

REVman
