Heading West for Trip of a Lifetime

I am going Mountain sledding!! Heading to Togwotee. Here is the intinerary. Get to tog on Saturday? Sled for three days with a guide. Wednesday and Thursday ski Jackson Hole. Friday fly to Colorado. Hike the mountains Saturday and Sunday. Monday through Wednesday ski someplace (maybe Breckenridge). Head home. Best part is it is all with my son. We have never gone West to ride so any advice or pointers are welcome. Cannot wait but better start working out. Some of the skiing involves backpacking with your skies strapped to your backpack. That is a bucket list item for my 50 plus year old body. I may role all the way down but at least I can say I dropped in somewhere off the beaten path.

Nice! it's like a dream trip.

Don't rule out a quick diversion to Grand Targhee. I think it's only about 45 min. from Jackson with a different view of the Tetons. 600" of snow, nice terrain, great runs, and some backcountry possibilities. After a day or so there I could make about 20 turns and it was time to re-oxygenate (and I was much younger)

Have a great trip!

Jealous! I have never been able to ride and ski on the same trip...always have had to pick one or the other!
Breck is a great town, but not my favorite Mtn to ski.

Thanks for the comments. I will take a look at Grand Targhee. I hope to be OK on the being in shape. Started working out pretty hard about two years ago and have dropped 40+ pounds to about 200. I can easily run a 5k and maybe push it to 10. Regardless, I think it is a whole new ballgame at altitude so it is time to step up the workouts and go for another 10 pounds. The last thing I want is to not be able to push this experience to the limit due to sucking wind because I am out of shape. Also want to get this in before my hip replacements can start acting up if they are going to.

I do have a question to all of you, Towotee has Cats and Polaris, both 800's. Which ones should we Rent? I have heard the Cats are better for newbi's to backcountry because they do not get stuck as easily.

My favorite place to ski in Colorado was Keystone and Steamboat. Keystone has night skiing! Targhee is definitely cool too, way less people than Jackson Hole. If you're going to rent sleds in Jackson, I have a 'secret' locals spot I could point you to, if you'd like. PM me.

Sounds like an awesome trip. That much activity at that altitude is gonna take it's toll. Get a good cardio routine going now. You will thank yourself for it when the trip takes place!!!

Congrats! Sounds like an excellent time with your son. Keep up your cardio & while there, make sure to stay hydrated & take snacks with you. Whatever sled you choose to rent, know this, you will get stuck just as easy with either one LOL! but, both are excellent deep snow sleds, enjoy!-Mezz
