Heard a rumor from a pretty good source.

Not defending any veiwpoints here but ... I have noticed rough conditions more than 1 time in that area. Go over to the east GM or Seney and there is a considerable difference ( Most Years ). Most times we just stop there for gas, then head looking for the smoothest trails. If you have to ride #8 for miles & miles and it is beat up ( ungroomed for several days ) it is rough going.
I think the lack of snow this year has contributed to many issues....

I wish ALL groomers got paid by the mile. I've been grooming for 4 years and my total pay has been 0! I'm not complaining, because I love to groom, but the same thing could be done up there with a good club and people that want to make a difference!

I ride that area many times a year. Now I'm not a groomer but are they grooming trail 8 or are they panning it or what? I have noticed it looks like the drag is not all the way down when I have seen the groomer on trail 8.

I'm about to call the contrator and find out. Could also be because they're grooming so fast that it's actually lifting the drag up.

They all do in Michigan!! $5.27 per mile for all designated trails which are most of the trails, the clubs just have to turn in the paperwork, which isn't that hard.

Several clubs by us including the one we drive for pay their drivers, they take that 5.27 per mile and buy fuel, pay bills and take $1 of it and pay the drivers. It works our club is not broke. Our club early on in the history of the club bought their tractors, saved their money (with volunteer driving hrs) bought a groomer barn, tools, drags and now have the money to pay the drivers. I think this makes for very happy drivers and I don't think the drivers get as irritated with snowmobilers ripping up the trails because we're getting paid to groom the trails for them to ride on. I know each club does their own thing, just think more clubs could pay their drivers....Oh well JMO

Sorry for the hijack

On the subject, I think the DNR is the one to call, it's their job, their the boss of the grooming, if someone is cheating the DNR needs to be the one to stop them. Sounds like their involved now, it will be interesting see what they do

Everyone knows that area gets pounded with traffic but that's just not and excuse when you can ride GM,Seney and see such a difference. Nobody should expects perfect trails all the time but things definitely needs to change in that area.

Would grooming at night help? Seems like every time I go there they are grooming during the high traffic times.

grooming should be done at night, makes a much more durable trail for day use. Slower speend and night time grooming helps tremendously

x2 Lenny.the best time is after 2 a.m., if located close to taverns,if low traffic areas the later the better, but most runs are 5-8 hours long. Example from Twin Lakes to Toivola if done at a SLOW speed takes 4 1/2 approx. sometimes longer, on a sled 15 min.

Everything you guys are saying about the grooming is correct......but remember the early part of this discussion.......the local guy is a for-profit business and he WILL NOT pay the shift differential to have the operators run at night. They sometimes run late into the evening hours (as in 10:00 P.M. or even slightly later) but as to overnight......forget it :(

Sounds to me as if the so called "operators" are running fast to getrdone, then hiding someplace till shift is over. Bumb's!

lol - good luck. What do you intend to try to accomplish by calling?

Thought that they might listen. It doesn't matter this weekend anyway. There's so much snow we've just been hitting logging roads in deep powder. I never thought I'd say this, but the moguls that infested the logging roads from traffic are a blast when the snow is this deep!

After reading this thread, I'm LESS than excited for the trip we have planned this week Tuesday thru Friday in the Munising area. Maybe we need to cancel and go back to the west side of the state like the last three times this season. Trails were beyond awesome this last Tuesday thru Friday. Probably the best in years. The fresh storm helped and cannot say enough how good the trails were. I've experienced rough trails in Munising in the past, though I do like to hammer through the rough stuff. But if it's turning into the square edge, unmaintained garbage, my friends and I will just go elsewhere.

So far this has been the best riding all year for us in munising and I've been here 5 trips or so. They are actually grooming slow. Even trail 8 is flat and it's the weekend. We didn't ride a ton of groomed trails but when we did, they were excellent. The best all season. We had the most fun off of the trails though ;)

To give credit where credit is due:

I rode up Trail 7 all the way from CR440 to Trail 8 (approx. 20 mi.).....across Trail 8 to Shingleton........and then back the same way a while later......best any of them have been in a LONG while. You could pretty much pick whatever speed you are comfortable with. Even the ice moguls were considerably mollified.

Which of course reinforces what I've been saying all along.......they know HOW to do it properly, they just refuse to spend the $$$ to do so........:(

I even saw a groomer track off of 2269 going to midway! 2 days in a row...unreal. We usually just bypass that section of trail and right to 440.

Yup - trails were killer all last weekend. I had a good size group staying at my house. Not a complaint.
