I have a big decision to make.. it is time for a new vehicle. Right now we have a town and country and a superduty v10. I currently have a company truck for work so thats a huge plus. But the wife drives over 35k a year to work and up north to visit family. Town and country only gets 19-21 mpg. So my options are to get her a new car to pile up miles on and keep my truck ( 11-13 mpg) and its a stick that she doesnt drive.

Option #2 is to sell both vehicles and get a new truck and a cheaper car for her to pile the miles up on for work. And the new truck to take when needed (weather). I sorta feel when putting that many miles on a vehicle for work it might be best to get a decent "disposable" car for that? Im thinking a cheaper decent car that get 28 plus mpg and a new truck thats an auto for her, power to pull things for me. Thinking maybe a crew ford f150 with the eco boost. I just dont like the fact of paying for a new vehicle and putting that many miles on it as a daily driver. Any info or opinions please share them!!

JIMO... I havent seen a vehicle that gets 28+ that can take a hit ( accident ). I kind of like OLD steel.... big car/ big vehicle kind of person. However some highend Lexus, Acura, BMW, have superior air bag systems. Driving all those miles increases the opportunity for an accident. Just saying.

I don't like racking up miles on anything that cost me big money however.... that's why I'm an oxymoron. I purposely own some high end newer stuff for taking trips in and reliability. It is just some mental complex I have that equates high miles to lesser value. When in actuality my stuff is very well maintained , I have an 2002 sub with 179K on it and would not hesitate to make a W-UP run ( 12 hrs ) hauling.

What's my point ? you may ask ! Just buy a beater that is good on gas , find a solid car that is 2-3K ( it may take some hunting to find a good 1 ) and run the miles up on that, then donate any extra monies to my fund " Snowmobiling Friends of the poor.com "
Just funnin with ya !

I am with you with the so called beater.we always have a nice car for the wife a decent work truck for me and some kind of 5k or so wagon or suv.
the last one was a grand vitara it got 20 we had close to 200k on it when sold. the one we now have had for 2 yrs is a 01 mercury mountaineer with a 5.0 it gets 17 average.it really saves on the nice cars we put way more mi on the 3rd vehicle than the so called daily drivers,
piling on those kind of mi just driving to work I would be looking in to some kind of 45mpg VW/ Benz/ Audi/ turbo diesel think you can get close to 50 out of the golf or bug 5spd. but a auto passat wagon would be closer to 40.
when I was looking last yr 03 06 could be had for around ten with around 70k.

08 with 76k. The vw and similar would be nice but im thinking cheaper. Like chevy malibu or somrthing like that. 4-5 k with 100k miles or little less. Or say 2000 buick of some sort....

Look at the Ford Fusion. People who have them love them and can get very good fuel economy. And it not small.

Ford has some lease deals going on with their eco boost pickups. Around $250 a month for two years. Don't know what the down payment is. If it isn't too much it would be hard to go wrong for $250/month. The Fusion seems to be a good car if you want a small car. Good reviews anyway.

I had a 2000 jetta tdi, best car I ever owned, vw quality is extreme. The best I ever did with MPG was 52 on my way to the Smokies to go hiking. Had 4 guys in the car fully loaded with an automatic. Normally I would get 44 on the road and if I ran 60 mph I would get 50, not sure why that day we got 52, maybe a tail wind I suppose. Like many say, manual trans does even better. When I become rich I will take a new TDI to Chip Foose and have him stretch it to a 6 door for seating of 6 and drive the car for the rest of my life.

Get the Mrs a new car. Get her a Subaru wagon with AWD and she'll be good to go. Sell your truck and downsize to a smaller one if ya need a truck.

I am in sales and average around 40000 miles per year have been doing this for 20yrs now and have only purchased used Nissans my 1st was a Sentra went to 245000 miles sold it just because it started to rust second car 96 Altima got it to 330000 miles before it started looking bad 3rd car was a 98 maxima drove it to around 290000 before i sold it and keep in mind i had no major work done to these cars.Currently driving a 2004 Maxima with 118000 so far.Imoa i would look for a used Nissan with even 100000 on it and drive it till it rusts out.

Option 2 sounds like a good idea. That option is the same scenario I've been in the last 5 years. I bought the wife a good used neon with only 14K miles and she currently has 130k on it now. Paid the neon with cash and then put some money down on an F150 and made payments on that until it was paid off. Everyone wants there loved ones to be safe, so picking a small car with good gas milage, good safety ratings and around a decent price will have some homework involved. Just letting you know others are doing the same thing with that option. We are planning on buying a new vehicle all ready after the holidays and will probably do the same thing.

Town and Country? Is that a fancied up minivan? does it have fake wood siding on the outside? A V-10? oh my??? sell both. A VW that gets 45 MPG does exist and you can be cool driving one, minus the flower holder. Put the wife in something that does not scream, "soccer mom". How about a Reliant "K" car for a beater. VW makes awesome cars. A few years back (3) I was going to pull the trigger on a real sweet H2 Hummer. drove it home to show the wife, got some pretty cold stares from the greenies on my way home. Never did buy it. Found a way sweet Mercedes, brought that home, people were wondering who the new doctor was in town, Bought it, big mistake. Now we drive old folks cars (Buick) and not a ticket or a notice by anyone at all. Insurance is cheap, who would steal a Buick anyways? Find your wife a Buick Rendevous all wheel drive and be done with it. Get yourself just enough truck that your buddies don't put the "L" sign on their forehead everytime you see them but you won't go broke running the extra 4 cylinders you don't really need. my .02 cents. Take the difference and buy a new sled.

I bought a H2, loved it for hauling, best vehicle ever in the snow. Hauled the rental Menards truck out stacked with 2 ft of drywall .... sideways out of a ditch. LOL It's not for greenies... what I did not like was the road noise, too much and it was also the biggest bug catcher I ever owned.

We bought a Buick LeSabre with 65,000 miles on it.
It is very safe, gets 28mpg on the freeway and is reliable and easy to work on.

I am not a ford fan at all but the neighbor friend just bought 2 crew cabs with the eco-boost motors , That is one sweet vehicle , especially when the second turbo kicks in . I am a fan however of the the TDI from VW
