Looking to replace my full face helmet with a helmet and goggles combination. I know alot of you guys/gals out there where them so here is what I am looking for:
I only want to buy the set once so, what is the best helmet out there for protection not only of my head, but also a helmet that protects the wind from hitting my face/nose from the opening's in this kind of helmet. Which helmet offers the best venting. What helmet keeps your noggin war? Also, what the best goggles out there. Any and all help will be much appreciated. I would like as much input as I can get before I decide on the purchase. Thanks

not to steal your thread here but has anyone had a 509 helmet? might get an open face and will most likely get 509 goggles but curious about their helmets.

Try using the search feature. There has to be about 5 or 6 threads discussing this, all with good information.

my set up

i currently have an arctic cat helmet that i have been very happy with. seems to be warm and pretty confortable. My best purchase was my Scott ProAirSnow googles thought. They fit into the arctic cat helmet very well and dont expose any skin. The goggles come with a nose guard and expanded foam all around the goggles about an inch, very happy with them.

I recently went through the same decision process. I ended up buying the HJC CL-X6 with the 509 googles and I also bought the "No Fog" mask.

I bought my helmet and goggles at http://monstersportsinc.com/

They have a combo deal. The helmet + Scott googles, Breath box, and quick straps for $164.95.

At the time the individual pieces were cheaper and I wanted the 509 goggles. I think they adjusted the combo price since I pointed it out to them.

I just purchased a HJC CLX5 as a left over, I had a CLX3 before this for 10 yrs. The new one has better visibility that the old one and lighter to. I bought an HJC breath cup too, Nice and warm. I have a set of Dragon goggles which have great visibility. I bought these at Snow Shack in Merrill WI 715-536-6077 great prices and will ship anywhere. They also have many other brands available.

Another vote for HJC, I have a CLX5N.

Use their breath box and a pair of 509 goggles. No fog and unless it's pretty cold, no need for a balclava or any other type of face mask.

Would a google company help you search for goggles?:)
Seriously though, I want to get an open face also. Does anyone make one that doesn't scream "hey look at me"? I just want black.

dekx- I'm considering making the switch as well. I found this old post awhile ago that had lots of info on specific helmets, goggles, etc. I actually posted a question at the end, no one replied. And mxz- I agree. I don't want to look like a racer out there, so don't need crazy graphics. But like indy said, HJC makes solid colored helmets. I actually wish they didn't have that goofy plastic visor thing on the top as I'm not sure about it's 'use' yet.

Here's the thread- hopefully the link works:

nic, As you know I started the thread your referring to. When your a newbie there are more questions than answers. I finally made the switch and am pretty happy. As stated I bought the matte black HJC CL-X6 and white rimmed 509 goggles. I think it looks very sharp! As far as the yellow tint on the goggles yes it they can be used day or night, but I feel your vision is somewhat impaired at night due to the yellow tint. Its like riding in twilight. I'm going to look at getting different lenses for night.

As far as the visor. I think it only purpose is for sun. It is removeable and adjustable. I learned pretty quick that adjusting it all the way down os best, otherwise it catches air on the trail and your head wants to go up and back.

Since I bought them I have only gone North once and it was a warmer weekend. I didn't feel like I got any more air on my face than with the closed face helmet, maybe even less. I just used the breath box. I tried the no fog, but it was too warm for that.

The one problem I had was on during the day when it was warm and we went off trail, I would get hot, start sweating, and then the goggles wanted to fog as a result. Anybody got any tricks for this?

Hope this helps in your decision.
