Tons of usefull info so far. I tried some of the HJC helmets on yesterday and the SPX fit me the best. Has anyone used this and does anyone know if the 509 goggles will fit with theis helmet?

I have a Fly Lite Helmet and 509 goggles all new this season and I was very happy with it, weight's in about half as much as my Modular helmet, nice tight seal and no fogging what so ever (even with a face plant when boondocking).

I've got a 509 helmet and goggle combo, new this year and I love it. Had the Klim helmet for the last few years and HJC moto style before that.

the problem on moto style helmets is the air leak in the temple area (outside and above your eye) Every moto helmet I've ever used had this leak and I've tried them with smith, scott, oakley, and dragon goggles.

My 509 lid and 509 gogs combo this year is by far the best setup I've ever used and no air leak in the temple which is nice. I haven't got cold wearing it at all this year even at -15 with winds.

I highly recomend this to anyone looking for a new moto style helmet, never had to use any special breath deflector, just std baclava.

Hope this helps. Oh and the helmet is only 180, that's a cheap helmet, that looks cool, and works great with thier goggles (which are 80).

I use the gold tinted lense and haven't had to change it all year, not even at night. It's a little dark if you do a lot of night riding but I don't and it's worked great for me!

180 to me is not cheap lol my helmet that i have now was $80. maybe i'm spending too much on mohawks! but then again you gotta look at it that a helmet will save your life

The 509 is tempting based solely on the fact that it really is the only helmet designed for snowmobiling. Not motocross, being used by snowmobilers. And the googles are made to go w/'em. But it's expensive. I'm also having a hard time wrapping my brain around the fact that the open helmet will not be freezing. I mean, my face was cold w/ the little airflow in my modular. How will I not freeze? Is it really just a klim bala, helmet, and googles- and I won't feel a huge draft on my face all day? I'm such a chicken. I want to pull the trigger and make the change- but I'm afraid to dump $200+, try it once, and hate it. I suppose there's always eBay if that's the case.

hey nic.....wondering if the only reason you are looking to switch is the air problem eyes watering i read about on the other post. Or are other people who switched really liking it and thats making you think about switching also. Seems like a big change from one to the other. Just wondering what makes you want to switch. I have been very interested in these threads all really good to read about....wondering does the wind get caught in the open face causing more force on your neck. I am going to have to make a change in a helmet and my reason is weight and wind. Had neck surgery and weight on my head really bothers me as well as the wind forcing strain on my neck. Trying to figure what will work the best for me.

I'm considering the switch only because of the air on my face. My eyes were watering on the cold mornings b/c of the airflow in my helmet on my last trip. I have been riding w/ the skidoo modular for 10 yrs now. I had the original, and when it finally broke after 7 yrs, I purchased the modular 2. The helmet is great for no fogging. My issue is that I wear contacts so cannot tolerate wind in my eyes. I loved the modular for the fact that it did not fog, so there was never a need to 'crack' your shield a bit to allow airflow and prevent fogging (like other full face helmets). I never remember an issue w/ my first modular, but this 2nd one seems cold. My husband finally upgraded his modular 1 (also 10 yrs old) to the modular 2 this year- and he noticed it is much 'colder' (due to the airflow) as well. So that got me thinking about the open helmet w/the goggles. I like that absolutely no air could get at my eyes. I also like that I could get different lenses for cheap- for sunny days vs cloudy/night riding. I also hear that fogging is generally a non-issue w/ this style as well. All big bonuses for me. Nothing can ruin a day of riding like a cold face or a fogging shield. BUT I just have such a hard time understanding how people aren't cold. I mean, if my modular felt like I had airflow- how is that big open hole not going to be cold? But it seems the goggles really fill the gap, and the right windproof bala will take care of the rest.

Well then I think you will be disappointed with goggles then. As that's one of the problems I have with them, lot's of air flow. Which is great if your off trail riding slower but doing 90 on rail graid my eyes are usally watering. If have 3 pairs, 509's, Habervision, Yamaha. Yamaha's are probably have the least amount of air flow, not sure who makes their goggles.

Helmet can be made warm, I just used electrical tape over all the vents on the front. mouth and forehead. Then get a fog evader mask - http://www.sledsolutions.com/store/product_info.php?cPath=164_192_210&products_id=617
Keeps out the cold and seals good.
I'am still playing with my goggles trying to tape over foam to cut down on air flow when trail riding.

You also seam to have a lot less peripheral vision with mx helmet so you have to turn your head left and right more.

No doubt helmets are lighter on your head and visor doesn't put much strain on your neck unless you tip your head back and it catch the air flow.
Hope this helps. Try and find somebody to let you try one first if you don't want to spend the money

edit: Looking in Yamaha catalog, looks like their goggles are made by Spy.
Also wanted to clarify about the 509's they are a great goggle fit helmets great, have a nose piece. I bought the polarized lenses and are great for sunny days and also cloudy days. Didn't want anyone thinking I didn't like these just because of the airflow.
