Help with trailer cap choice

So I want to put a cap on my 12 v-front trailer with drive off salt shields. I am considering the Sno-Cap, which you guys seem to like. But the price of this canvas cap is about $1600 plus install. I thought it would be less expensive than an aluminum cap, but it might not be.

So here goes-
Where can I price/buy an aluminum cap?
How much would it cost?
Is the canvas cap better (lighter weight, longer lasting)?
If an aluminum cap and a canvas cap are nearly the same price, which would you buy?

Thanks!

I remember when I bought my 12ft Floe the top was over 2k that is why I passed it up for a later day and this was over five years ago. Recently someone told me it would now between 3k-4k which I will not pay that much for a 2nd enclosed trailer. I can't believe how the prices have gone up. My 27ft inline UScargo all aluminum snowmate was 6750 in '02 and that is almost the same price I see for used one tight now.

I have not seen the above trailers but that price sounds decent...but good luck on your search...

what brand is your current trailer, why not look at their covers? For the pricing you posted I would start looking around for a clean used unit for a bit more.

Would you do fiberglass? I have one on my Triton and like it. Send me a message if you want to know about what cover I have.

One of my friends had a cap put on his trailer 2 or 3 years ago now and he used Sled Shed. He has been very happy with it as well. I think then he paid about $1000.

Its all in what you want. I use to have an enclosed snowmobile trailer and a two place for atv's in the summer that I would pull behind the 5th wheel. Sold both and have a 14' tandem with a SnoCap that pulls nice behind the 5th wheel. Best change I ever did. The light trailer sure is nice to pull when the roads are bad. 4 years and no issues with the canvas. The only other one I would concider is the Protector. JMO.

I have seen clam shells that might work but need 2 for 2 sleds but least amount of money. The most popular Alum.cap is made by Bearcat & used by other trailer OEMS.

These guy are in your Neighborhood they quoted me $1500 101x10 so it may be a little more for a 12' but they open both direction so it may not be a problem with ramps on the front I would give them a call.
I think the fiberglass would hold up much longer than the aluminum which I have heard have about a 10 year life span before they start to crack.

We just paid $1600 for an 02 Glacier Enclosed Trailer 8.5 x 10... Seems like a lot of cash just for a cap.

Thanks Skeeter...I did talk to these guys and I think this is the answer. I like the fiberglass idea, too, plus they are only 90 min away.

I'd be interested in what you end up doing. My 2006 sled looks like heck from riding on an open trailer, even with a cover on it, so I'd like to make sure the next one is always covered.

Hoosier-
I'm gonna go with Fibertech out of Howard WI. It's called a rocker cap, opens front and back, fiberglass, covers all of the 12 ft trailer except the V-front. $1650 installed.

I should probably do my own homework, but do you know if they offer something similar for a 14' trailer?

Anyone ever custom make their own trailer cover? Seems like it might not be too difficult to make a fabric cover, similar to what they put on semi-trailers. I'm assuming by the time you factor in your time and energy as well as the quality of the final product, you might just wish you bought one.

a few yrs back we shrink wrapped a 6pl hauling 7 for a trip west and carried enough to re wrap and the torch for the trip home worked sweet and less than 60bucks in shrink wrap.
