I live 1 1/2 hours north of Green Bay, so this Favre thing is always being discussed. Let me explain to you Viking fans what the problem is.
Favre is one of, if not the greatest player ever. Vikings are a great team this year, most say they were only 1 player short of being the best and that player is Favre. Favre will lead the Vikings to a great season, maybe the Superbowl, maybe even winning it.
Let's imagine that the Vikes finally do win a Superbowl this year. Euphoria will break out! There will be lutefisk fires on the Iron Range, a new stadium will be planned, the hookers on Hennepin Ave will work for free for a week! It will be so joyful that St. Paul will actually have a downtown bar other than Allary's open past 8:00 on a weeknight!
Then, it will get cold. Black ice will form on the I-35 bridge, your beer will freeze in the trunk on the way home from MGM. Your dog will refuse to go out and pee, and your wife will just start to look mean. It's winter in Minnesota.
But you and your buddies will stand by your fish houses and work on your sleds and talk about NEXT YEAR! Ya sure, by golly, next year we're gonna win it again! Favre is gonna do 2 in a row.
And then, you will wait.
And wait
And wait
And FAvre will say "I'm not sure I have it in me to play again, but I'll let you know in 10 weeks." Then he drives off on his $12MM tractor.
And you wait
And wait
Then, you realize you have a quarterback problem, it never really went away, Favre just swept it under the rug.
And you wait
A good quarterback is up for trade, like a Cutler or Orton. Vikes pass, 'cause they are waiting, waiting.
And you wait
And you wait
Another good QB is available, Vikes pass, and wait.
And you wait
Maybe he comes back year 2. Repeat above sceanrio, except something happens and it doesn't go so well.
Good QBs available, Vikes pass
Then you wait.
Wait.
Now he retires. Tavaris is gone, as is Sage, they left because they didn't want to wait. Vikes are buried in middle of draft, now you have a quarterback problem that will take years to fix.
That is the essence of the Favre issue. Make up your mind, fish or cut bait. Ted Thompson may have pulled the trigger a year or 2 too fast, but he got the decision made to move on with a quarterback. The Jets weren't so lucky.
The "hire Favre to win one" strategy can have very long term detrimental effects on a team. But if all you want is to put one trophy in that case and mortgage the next 5-6 years to mediocrity it could, possibly work.
If it doesn't work you are as screwed as the Jets.
