It's true BUT the news said Phelps WILL NOT BE OPEN. All trails in Vilas Co with the exception of Phelps will open Friday

"Except Phelps"......LMAO.....I think they did that just to tick off whitedust...lol ;)

Yep So far I'm locked in south to Forest Brule system & north to the Phelps system. At this point I just have to laugh & wait a few more days. Great thing for the rest of Vilas good to see Eagle River making some money this weekend. :) Phelps a poor area & locals want to stuff freezer with venison any chance they can get so I understand but the trails are groomed so not sure how they will keep riders out? I'm sure we will have some pissed off non snowmobiler locals but not at me I'm sitting.lol

Pete from what I hear the rest of the trail system got brushed and inspected after the rain last week. I thought maybe it was just that Phelps was behind on the final brushing and didn't get inspected in time to open Friday?

Dale could get thru Phelps quickly to inspect. As you know we have lots of forest land but private land as well for trails 17 & 6. My gut feeling is a private land owner wants to deer hunt but don't know for sure. Phelps does everything possible to promote deer herd always has a predator hunt kills coyotes & such big time. I will look around today see how trails look in Phelps.... Eagle River trails look pristine just need to be ridden in. Good for them did a greet job of preparation!:)

Phelps trails are groomed at least both Trails 6 & 17 look good. North Twin Lake is not marked but did not expect that yet. There is plenty of snow to work with the groomer took 1 shot & has a ton more snow to drag in if they choose to. St Louis Rd ice packed white & has 2" of fresh snow on it for sleds to travel to trails looks lake early Jan conditions. I have no idea why Phelps is not opening this Friday so I asked what is up & no one knows at this point. I sent out emails to the town board asked them to get on it if want my vote then perform at least don't pass buck give me answer so I can understand. My gut tells me a private land owner wants to hunt deer & only takes 1 lander owner to shut trails down thru his/her land. Hoping for an update soon.

Seems that Lando trails are not opening either Phelps & Lando trails connect & I hope we don't have land trail issue. To the west Conover & Eagle River trails good to go.

Pete, how ya been? Stop in the shop and say hi seeing as though Land O' trails officially open Friday at 6pm. Some trails have already been panned or groomed with grooming starting a little over this weekend too and full time starting Monday depending on precipitation. And railroad grade into MI is a highway I hear........

Well I rode watersmeet, trails were flat smooth and hard. Not much snow but rideable I can't imagine all of Vilas opening up and getting pounded with the little snow they got. I would imagine Phelps is holding off until more snow. I'm not sure opening this friday is best for the trails (with the little snow), but more or less good for business. I stopped in ER for trail passes, gas, and food on my way up this past weekend, couldn't imagine riding on what they had...

Well I measured 8-9 inches of snow underneath 1 inch of ice cover a few days ago. Since then at least another inch or 2 of new snow & wind has been blowing snow all around. Phelps can grab tons of snow from the trail sides bring to center of trail if that is the problem & they always do that as season progresses. Phelps is not the UP snowbelts but pretty darn good early conditions & the sooner it gets ridden in the better for December trail conditions. I would not deter anyone from riding Vilas just need to understand early season trail conditions.

Today no problem all roads are packed snow/ice base with a little freshy on top going to be fast.:) Ride north more snow. Off trail will be a little weird not sure how the untouched ice/snow pack will treat A-arm paint jobs?
