Ho Ho, There Goes the Snow

Last two days we had temps in the forties. I must say I loved it. Maybe I will only have to shovel my roof once this year.

Still plenty of snow to play in. Instead of 4 feet on the ground there is 3 feet.

I just knew this would happen when we received all of that snow early on and couldn't open trails until December 15th due to an extended deer hunt. Now no snow in the forecast as far as John can see. More warm temps coming yet this week. 37 degrees here the next 3 out of 4 days and it was 42 yesterday and was only supposed to be 38. Very frustrating but thankfully we have good snow on the ground,

Ya no good news in Johns forecast either....

Seen that....uuugh, doesn't look good for any of us. Winter is finally "officially" here and we are breaking temp records, not to mention the warmest temps since Halloween, that's the only problem when it comes early, especially at the scale it did for some of us. Its still early yet, lets hope things change after all we are only 2 days in.

There is plenty of snow in most areas to withstand 3-4 days of mid 30's temps during the day, as long as it doesn't rain. This will help settle things down a bit, and when it freezes, there will be an awesome base under any new snow we get. Patience people, its just barely Christmas!!

It’s definitely early but kind of a bummer with the warm up and slushy lakes. From my cabin in Hayward you can’t get anywhere without hitting several lakes and they are very slushy and gates to them are closed. . On a positive note I just hit 720 miles on my new Assault from 2 trips to Mass City, the early season riding was fantastic. Put 420 (yeah I know , haha) miles on this past weekend and hit about 5 miles of crappy trail out of ontonogan, that’s it. Guess I’ll enjoy the 55 degree Christmas Day!

These warm-ups always make me think; "why is it warmer in Iron Mtn., MI than the Fox Valley of WI (Green Bay to Oshkosh)?

Totally agree. Was out Firday and found the trails to be sugary [sugarie?]. It will certainly firm up the trials. There's too much here to melt all the way unless we have multiple days of 40-50 degrees.

It's the best start I can remember since being up here first in 1991.

We just rode the backcountry around Twin Lakes and it was pretty good. Yeah, pulled a few skis on bowed branches but it was pretty good. We found loads of great jumps everywhere. We stayed away from the pole lines and strictly were in the timbers and mostly flat terrain. Too many issues with big hills right now because it's a little thin.We needed this melt for making some base. Sadly not much snow in the forecast.

The Lake effect will kick in when the Cold comes back this weekend I was looking at the different weather models and some are saying a storm for this Sunday and arctic cold next week so that will get the LES going. What are the issues with the big hills?

You talking to me?

Well if you are, hills around here harbor a lot of rocks outcroppings and the angle of slopes tend to hold a lot less snow. The areas that are steep that we ride I know pretty well and have seen them in summer and I know what lies under that snow.
One of my favorite pole lines is By Pike Lake. First, not a lot of people ride it at all and it has some great stuff on it but it's too early for me. I buy enough A arms as it is now.

Well, now that you posted that, pole line by Pike Lake, the "not a lot of people ride it" statement will change. Lol.

No they won't. It's a very long pole line ride just to get there and no where to park a trailer for miles.

Make sure to venture down that hill by the Bruno. Bring a come along and about 200 yards of tow strap.

Sandylake is cooking "Johnsiville Brat's, Johnsiville Brat's"

Yeah, I kiss and tell but there are plenty of places to ride backcountry. Where we rode yesterday nobody rides. We were jumping stumps and root masses like two kids.....well, one of us is a kid...
