Home self defense weapon

My wife just told me yesterday she wants a pistol for her nightstand. Surprised the heck out of me. A sign of the times I guess.
For ease of use, and teaching her to use, I'll be getting her a semi-auto pistol. most likely a 32.

I came home the other night to my wife informing me she applied for her foid card. I was completly surprised as well. So I guess I'm also in the market for some home protection, and interested in opinions on what would suit her the best. Sad times for sure!

Sad times for sure, I think my wife's decision is on account of the fact I work a fair amount of nights. And now with winter here I go on my snowmobile trips. The dogs will let her know someone comes in the house, but no real protection. Attachment.jpg

Lol, yeah they don't look all that vicious! I'm in the same boat. Work a lot of nights and sometimes have to stay out of town. We have an "alert" dog as well but she just doesn't feel safe anymore. Time for something with a little more punch.

Pistol is much easier to hide or conceal but a shooter with a shotgun, does not have to be exact to hit the target like a pistol. If whatever you choose goes "BANG", more than likely, your mission has been accomplished. If there are no children present in the household, I would go with the shotgun and or shotguns. The more the merrier!

Good point about the shotguns, I've got mine, and in hopes if I need to pull it out, the sound of racking in a round makes the bad guy run. I'd rather not actually shoot some SOB that's in my house. I'll have to make that point to my wife, if it's pointed in the general direction of a burglar, she'll make a hit. Versus a pistol that might not hit. She doesn't like the size of the 12 gauge is why she said she wants a pistol

If you're truly looking for home security AND there are no children present then I would go scatter gun. Can't miss and will stop someone in their steps. Hand gun if you need to conceal it, just make sure there is a way to make it kid safe and still quick and easy to get to.

short 12 gauge pump with buck shot. why because every one knows the sound of pumping one in the chamber and if they still have the ball s to climb the stairs after hearing that my 3am aim down the stairs dose not have to be all that good

Well, momma likes her Ruger 10/22 with a 50 round barrel clip. I prefer my Ithaca model 37 pump 12 gauge with buckshot. And since the kids are out of the house a strategically placed Glock 9mm with a couple full clips.
Open carry with a Ruger semi auto while mowing the front yard (gopher patrol) on the ole John Deere just to get the message out.

...... I would go scatter gun. Can't miss .......

Not totally true.......at very close range, like say a staircase, you need a little distance for the shot pattern to disperse some otherwise all you get is a bigger hole......unless you're using a sawed off one which is extremely illegal.......

Buckshot thru a slug barrel. And really who cares if a sawed off is legal in your own home when a criminal breaks in.

There are arguments for all yes the sound of a shot gun is intimidating but most have a very small spread at a home defense distance. And a sawed off is illegal however if u so desire basically a sawed off there are plenty of reproduction coach guns that have very short barrels. If you want to be well prepared consider what I call 3 setting 3 setting gives you 3 appropriate means of protection 1close combative easy response I.e handgun in a close to you location with easy retrieval availability. This first option is your realistic grab first small easy to handle and not overly heavy. 2 is your close to mid range reaponse. Basically this is.wjere your pump shotgun will come.in handy , you know they are in your house but no with in a stone's throw rack one in and hope they choose the peacefull option which is run like H$// is on there butt. If not a buck shot round will drop them with ample spread at a midrange distance say pf 20 feet. Remember a 20 or 410 will do jist fine as well and easyer.to manage for a female. Add now onto 3 this is your long range protection. You AR or rifle of your choice. This comes into play more seldomly but has many proper uses from distance protection to intimidation. This is something I teach local one more of a one on one basis due to specifics like children.in the house.or.other details. So theres.my .02 I would rather be over prepared than under my family is my life and I take no short cuts in.protecting them.

And polarisrider1 there are case files where charges have been dropped on the pos low life breaking in because they were shot or harmed with something that was illegal. Plus it is much easier to have a.fully functioning correct weapon than it is to have something you shouldnt....

looking at a .45 shorty but I like the feel of my youth pump 20g. If need be, hopefully just the sound of the pump will cause the intruder to run. If not, that turkey load is going to leave a fairly large blood trail.

I have always thought a shotgun would fit the bill as a handgun is not as reliable in the hands of someone that does not "any" training other than shooting at a target as stressful shooting is not anywhere close to just punching paper. I have since read a good article from a trainer/ex-operator that has gotten me to consider an AR carbine as he covered a lot good reasons to support the use, from the argument of over penetration to the quickness that people can pick up handling an ar, amongst many other topics many of which I thought was a con. CQB is not just for handgun or shotgun

for me it would be my 9mm carry gun, it is what i train the most with and most comfortable with. now my wife has never been comfortable with any of my handguns so i bought a browning buckmark .22 for her to try ( plus i really wanted one ). today she shot it and within 50 rds. was getting 10rd. grouping like this and enjoyed herself for a change as a new shooter. my point to this is if you are a new shooter or working with one start with a .22 and build from there (10 well placed .22 beat 10 9mm thrown all over the place). 20151128_143221.jpg plus it gives you a reason to buy a couple new guns !

Bingo. My wife is way more comfortable with her 22 and 410.
