Well, kinda:

  • Usually qualified Expert or Distinguished in smallbore rifle in high school/college competitions.
  • Mostly Expert & several Distinguished awards in NRA sectionals with Detroit Edison Pistol Club[SUP]1[/SUP].
  • Expert High Power Rifle (M1), National Rifle & Pistol Championships, Camp Perry, Ohio, 1962(?) Army ROTC, sponsored by the Fifth US Army Advanced Marksmanship Unit, Fort Knox, KY.
  • Expert Rifleman, U.S. Army marksmanship qualification.
My introduction to stupid gun laws:
In Detroit at the time, carrying unloaded target pistol(s) from home to the range in a locked case in the trunk of the car was technically "carrying concealed weapons" (there was no distinction between that and having a loaded pistol in the "glove box"!) and required a CCW license, which at the time was issued solely upon the discretion of some police bureaucracy, with no appeal or recourse, and the application form was on par with filling out the US Office of Personnel Management's 127 page Standard Form 86 for a security clearance, plus providing a completed "application for sainthood" in the Catholic Church.

([SUP]1 Detroit Edison Pistol Club, 100 West Willis Street, Detroit, MI,
The building is still there today (see Google Street View)!, the range was on the 2nd floor.)

[/SUP]

I salute you, sir! :)

With all the crap going on in this world today you be stupid not to have a gun in the house. I like it when more people buy guns because someday you might need it.

Right now gun sales are going through the roof, thanks in no small part to the government. I hope they don't realize it. :)

True, true. Just picked up a DPMS Oracle semiautomatic tactical rifle today. 5.56 NATO/.223 with 2-30 round clips, for varmints. Oh, and a 500 round can of Federal .223 rem. ammo. Because varmints have friends.

And not all varmints are 4-legged. :)
I never really had any interest in owning an evil black scary gun (AKA AR-15 "assault rifle") until after Sandy Hook and the government was trying to take measures to tell me I couldn't. I bought it just to thumb my nose at them. So, they are directly responsible for at least one sale. :)

Exactly. My wife said, what do you want for Christmas? I said, "Well I need a scope for my new varmint gun. How about getting me a Redfield Counterstrike red-dot sight 1x30 mm with an adjustable visible red laser", She shrugged and said, "Could you write that down for me". Gotta love her!

For some reason I see you saying that like Ralphie from A Christmas Story.
@ frnash, having a high school rifle team would be a great opportunity for kids to learn proper gun shooting and ownership. Wish I had that opportunity in HS.

EXACTLY! Plus plain ol' respect for firearms!

I'm sure that spending my summer vacations UP on my grandparents' farm in Bruce Crossing from a very young age, plus observing and learning gun safety and etiquette from them didn't hurt either. All of their long guns, deer rifles shotguns were stored (unloaded, of course) on an open, unlocked rack on the wall, with the handguns stashed in a dresser drawer. Living there, even at an early age, I sure learned to keep my paws off 'em, except (a bit later) under direct supervision. Eventually being introduced to the use of a single-shot 22 rifle, target shooting and bagging the occasional "varmint", and later deer hunting in the Ottawa National Forest lands along the Middle Branch of the Ontonagon River. That and learnin' to earn your keep doing daily farm chores — a helluva lot better life experience than hangin' in the streets of Detroit through the summers!

As for the original question. I have a Browning 12 gauge handy, a Ruger 9mm with 10, 15 and 30 shot magazines not far away. I think a 357 is in my future, and would like a .22, or something small, for my wife.
