We lost what little snow we had yesterday....and there is ZERO ice on any lakes (it had started forming in the bays this weekend...then...it rained for two days).....I can't remember the last time the U.P. didn't have rideable snow for the opener.....So far this is not a great start to winter for us sledders....and the 10 day doesn't look all that favorable.....even john changed the track of his "wild card" further south, and pushed it back a couple of days...granted I know it's a "wild card" and anything can happen....but right now it would take a miracle to get the lakes froze, and safe by Christmas break...not looking good at all here in northern Wisconsin.

Its coming. May not be ideal by Christmas break, especially ice, but I still have hope for rideable snow.

if you want some hope go over to weatherbell.com and watch his Saturday summary video, talks a lot about the month of December and cold and snow

The ice on lakes and swamps in Wisconsin for December is what concerns me. Was hoping to stay at my cabin over Christmas break but if the lake isn't safe its a no go. Last year didn't provide safe ice til January so that was a bummer. Its always nice to ride when you don't have to take vacation days and the kids can come with. Worst case scenario, I'll drive to wherever the snow flies! Could be another busy year in the UP!

Uh...last year?

I am not going to sugar coat how depressing it looks out my windows right now, but we have only had 4 years in the past 16 that we were grooming on Dec 1.

One of the cool things about snow and playing in it, is that things can change in a big hurry. I know lakes need to freeze in areas as well, that is a different story. But we can be 45 one day and 2 feet of snow the next.

Hang in there B!

PS, here is one for you Tracker. 4' of the ground and they have been out riding. Oh....Canada!

Load up and head out to Bismarck ND. 18 inches of wet heavy snow. You don't even have to bring extra A-arms. There are only 15 trees in the whole state so your odds of hitting one are slim.

Just being realistic...last year did suck...we didn't have safe ice until the middle January....and trails by me were only open 6 weeks...the shortest amount of time being open in the last 15 years...we only received 4 inches of measurable snow for the month of November this year...and it's been even warmer this year than last year....sorry you find my posts "doom and gloom"....but last year was crappola, and this year is off to a bad start...I call it like I see it

I don't intend this to be in any way to be political. But I do see the climate changing. I'm 64, and there is a big difference in that period. I miss the old days.

Considering the age of the earth, that 64 does not hold much of a statistical value. Maybe if you were 10,064 you could tell your grandkids how much worse winter was. Seriously though, I remember winters worse in my adult years than my teenage years. My child hood years mostly 80's early 90's. Memories don't really mean much when we live as short as we do. Plus they are skewed.

I think it is a perspective thing. Back in the 60's when it snowed a lot it was a big deal to get dug out and proceed with life. Nowadays even big snows are dealt with much quicker. We have more and better machinery. There is really no longer such a thing as a three day blizzard like we had when we were young. Also most folks in the snow belt have at least one 4 wheel drive vehicle. Back in the 60's they were rare. More heated garages, more snowblowers, better heat sources. It all adds up. For myself Mother Nature would really have to have a hissy fit. In my immediate family we have 4 four wheel drive vehicles. Also a full size John Deere tractor with a blower on the back and a loader on the front. Also a generator to run my whole farmstead and enough wood for my woodstove for about 3 years. Plus 1600 gallons of LP. And of course 4 beautifully restored 2003 ZR 900's. I never had all that stuff when I was 20. So yes - winters are not as rough as they used to be.

I agree with both renegade, and grub. What you both said is very true. But, what I remember when we started snowmobiling, our snow season now is by far shorter. We had snow earlier, and it lasted longer into the spring. We could ride a lot without leaving home. Our picture albums remind us of this. If travel was needed, we could find good riding snow in S/W Wis at anytime. It's not that way now a days. S/W, and Western Wis. has some of the best riding scenery to be hold. Over the years, we would have to travel further, and further northward to get to the good riding snow. It's been 20 years now since my wife and I decided to just commit ourselves to the "snow belt" areas that were less dependent on snow storms. Like Skylar says, LES are his 3 favorites. But time goes on, and so will we. I will have a whole lot better outlook when it turns white outside! So much for this now. I still have all those good memories. Have a great day!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The snow we had melted in the TC metro. I am a bit frustrated that I worked so hard to move that stuff, but it is what we do when it snows.

BTW, when talking memories of snow, I grew up on the plains. The snow gets extremely hard out in the open, from being blown around all the time. We had one winter that was pretty bad. They had a hard time opening the road. V plow truck just kept ramming. Neighbor gal was riding her bike on the drifts alongside the road while we watched. She was able to ride right over the telephone lines because of the snow depth.

I definitely think winters are NOT the same as they wee even 10 yrs ago, never mind going back farther
sure we had a few ODD days that temps went up in winter time, but it was traditionally COLD ALL winter, and SNOW most of winter here
all winter here any more it can be 60 one day 30 next and back and forth
Last winter is the first winter I can EVER recall in all my yrs that our local trails never opened even ONCE, ZIP not one day
we never had SUPER snow here, but we had snow and trails normally a few weeks or more every winter up until about the early 2000's
since then, its been BAD to poor at best! with a few exceptions here and there,m but more BAD than good yrs!

we just don't have seasons like we did, too many seem to over lap and repeat MID season of a different season!
40 degree's in July and 70 degree's in Dec last 12 months here<>
something ain't normal no more LOL
