Keweenaw Trails

I agree with all you guys as far as 13 and 109, they are very fun trails. The frieda loop is great too, we really prefer taking all the off loops vs the flat and straight freeway, it's too bad the summer storms/floods ruined it for this year.

There was actually as much or more snow towards 12 and past into Baraga. Snow depth on 8 / 15 was Good.
I totally agree 109 being a GREAT trail with maintenance.
What really gets my juices going, is having 13 Twin Lks to Greenland, right there. Another GREAT trail in season, being groomed regularly.
I've broken trail on it (13) after 6ish inches of snow. ABSOLUTELY some of the greatest (on trail) riding I've had in the Kee.

13 from Greenland to twin
then go 109 down to 12
then 12 back over toward 3

epic loop.

The only loop that was lost for the season due to flood damage is the Frieda loop. Not bad really! Everything else (loop wise) from Mass north is good-to-go (or will be after freezing up). Will have to go Hancock-Calumet the crappy way (17), but that's not a loop.

All things considered, I think the season will work out great considering the summer storm damage, with regards to fairly minimal closures. Lotta people busted hind-end to get us there, so huge kudos to those folks.

Will be interesting to see how many seasons the Frieda loop and 3 from Dollar Bay to Lake Linden will be down for the count. Supposedly 3 in the closed section has some unbelievable washouts when it comes to cubic yardage of dirt gone.

13 a must ride and when you come up through that old growth area, very scenic! there was talks earlier of land owner potentially closing it, that would have been a SERIOUS loss! plus a nice break from riding on a straight line
Rode through it the first time last year and loved it. Was a fun run.

shhh, trail 13 is awe-full, Last year, one morning on our trip, 8 inches of fresh fluff, my buddys said "you lead" 26 smiles to Greenland, no tracks, I was still grinning ear to ear when the last of them arrived. That has always been my favorite trail in the UP and I was so greatful when it opened, it would be a huge loss to lose it. You can tell it was designed for snowmobilers by snowmobilers, or at least with our safety in mind with runways at the end of long straightaways and always a jog before the turn. The new signage thing, why take down curve signs (and the straight) they were very helpful to people that didn't know the trail. With the Frieda loop right up there too,I hope that it is only a one season closure.

Well, I'm pretty sure I know the answers that are coming to my question since we've talked to a few motels between twin lakes and calumet, but I'm going to ask for a conditions update anyway before we completely throw in the towel and scrub our trip for Xmas week......................

Sounds like things are barely rideable, if rideable at all up that way ( or anywhere for that matter ) so unless there's a Christmas LES storm coming to the Kewee area by Friday or Saturday we're giving up until the next time we can make it UP, probably near the end of January.

John, if you are listening, what say you ? Can you work some Xmas magic with the forecast LOL ???

Yep, great loop, but I would continue down 109 to Sidnaw, stop at the new bar there, and then back up 109 to 12 and over to 3. That section of 109 from 12 to Sidnaw is one of my favorite trails UP there! Wide, rolling and fast through old growth forest.

I have added some text to the daily write up highlighting my thoughts on the situation for Christmas through New Years. So check it out.

That and Dance Heikki, DANCE!

109 is a total blast of a trail from the turnoff on 3 (Twin Lakes area) until the 12 junction, but I've never been on it when the snow didn't get thin the farther you go S/E. You go from an area in the system that rarely suffers for snow depth, to sometimes barely ride-able conditions in what seems like a pretty short mileage. Every year. Gotta be some scientific reason why Baraga and a radius around that inlet/bay are always low snow, relative to the rest of the area. Like a snow shadow or something.

But that section of 109, with good snow, a fresh groom, and low traffic is one of my happy places in the area. Love the up, down, and around and all of the curves. Reminds me of good singletrack with a dirtbike.

Baraga and Lanse and Skanee are situated too close to the lake to get heavy lake effect snow. Elevation also plays a part in this. Head a little inland from any of those 3 towns and then the snow conditions generally improve. The Huron mountain area is a prime example of elevation enhancing lake effect.

The change over from warm temps to cold occurred today and with the change over we must of received a quarter of an inch of new snow if that. Temps are now in the mid twenties and its expected to stay cold for like a week.

from looks of john's extended map graphic, could be some very good needed news for the UP, maybe POLARIS DAN can start his 10 weeks in the yoop, hopefully all pans out well for everyone in the north woods. Down in our corner of WI winter bummer as usual. Feb 16 wont get here soon enough!

Just got back yesterday. Enough snow on the trails but warm weather is a killer. Trails are junk almost directly behind the groomer. Don't get me wrong...they need snow...lower then I have seen. It's been a bust of a year. Another round of Rain here is Central WI.

Thanks for the reply, I guess we'll wait a couple more weeks and see what happens.......................it's raining like crazy here right now too, depressing winter so far to say the least.

Looks like some snow fell in the Houghton area - any updates on Toivola, Houghton, and further north? Heading up early tomorrow morning.
