I am looking at getting the Kindle ereader from Amazon. I have a bunch of long trips coming up and instead of packing several lbs of books I thought I'd give this a try.
Just wondering if anyone has any pros or cons about it?

Bought the wife a Nook and she loves it Plus you can surf the web and down load books at any place with WIfi not sure if the kindle can do this or not.

The Mrs has a Kindle, she loves that stupid thing more than me, sometimes. It can download books anywhere with WIFi. I gotta admit, it's pretty cool. She got the small one, with a case (has a cute little light in it for night reading). It has awesome display properties in the dark or out in the sunlight. In the case, it's the same size as your average soft cover book. I'm not a reader, so that's about all I know about it. I've never used it, but I've seen her using it plenty...LOL.....Like I said, pretty cool.

I have a Nook Color and love it! It costs a little bit more than a Kindle but it can read more formats than a Kindle. It uses the Android software. The big kick on the Nook is the battery life, you just have to plug it in more often. I checked out all the ereaders and I think the Nook Color is the best one out there at this time. Give it a look at Barnes and Noble.

I got a kindle for Xmas (as the other poster mentioned, the small one, with the leather cover with the light in it) and I LOVE it. I have gone through 4 books in 3 weeks and working on number 5. It's really easy to use. I got the 3G & Wifi one- can download a book wherever. Note- if you have wifi, be sure to turn it off if you're not searching the store or actually downloading. Once you have the book (it takes like a minute from order time, until it appears) there's no need for it. Right on the main menu, there's a place 'turn off wireless'. This saves the battery. If you leave it on, it's constantly searching for networks. I didn't realize this until it told me so (low battery warning, turn off wireless to preserve). It then proceeded to work for the next 4 hours on 'low battery'). Without wireless- I have to charge it every 5-7 days. And that's reading it daily. I constantly turn it on and off b/c I have little kids that interrupt all the time. Anyway- I'm loving it. I think the nook is a little 'fancier'... color screen. Can read magazines, etc. If you are a book lover and really just want to not lug around books- I highly suggest this. It does have other options as well, but I haven't tried them yet. Scrabble. Crosswords. Etc. The books seemed really cheap to me. I got Girl with Dragon Tattoo for $5. Next book in that series was also $5, and I think 3rd was 9.99. Water for Elephants was $9 I think. I admit I'm a fan of actual books. Hardcovers. But if I read a book I absolutely love, I can still buy it. This just allows me to read a lot more, cheaper, and more conveniently. The little light works awesome in the cover. Haven't read it in bright light yet- it's winter after all. I'm looking forward to next week's 6 hr drive north to read. I'm a dork.

Thanks All

I was debating about getting a Kindle or Nook. After debating and reading here I went ahead and bought myself a Kindle - Christmas present for myself. I got the 3G one too...

Can't wait to get it so I can never do anything but read all the live long day!

My mom got the kindle for xmas and she loves it. I also read a lot and am thinking of getting one although my Iphone has Ibooks as well as the kindle app but the screen is smaller. My friend has the nook and she loves it, she travels a lot and doesn't like to lug a bunch books around. I go through a book a week so I spend a lot on books I don't have a library close by but also don't want to be under any time constraints in when I have to return them, so the fact that I could just do it from my computer is awesome.

I was thinking travel. I have a library a block away from my house - which is great but don't always have what I want and need and isn't always great for travel. Few years back we were snowmobiling for a week and one of my kids got sick and I had to stay back. If the people that owned the house hadn't had a stash of books, not sure WHAT I would have done. The kindle eliminates the problem of there NOT being a stash of books.
Am thinking of summer and all of those times that I've left the house on vaca with what I thought were plenty of books and then was reading a book a day and then ran out of reading material. Am thinking the kindle solves that.
My only debate was the with the nook I can download books from my 'brary for free. Went with the kindle b/c they have the friend sharing thing and I have just the people in mind I plan to mooch off of!?! I'm a little too excited about a book reader coming!

I've had it for exactly a month now and just finished book #8. I LOVE it. So easy to take along wherever you go. Battery lasts forever. I have the cover with the light, which uses the kindle power for the light. I use the light a lot and it lasts at least a week. Without the light they are supposed to last 3-4 weeks between charging. My biggest problem is deciding what book to read next. You're going to love it. Also- there are free books and things on Kindle as well. A lot of the 'classics' are free... Little Women, etc.

Gave one to Nora for Christmas and she loves it.

Seems very easy to use and if you like reading books, seems the way to go.
