Klim socks

Saw a number of comments in a different thread for boots about Klim socks and most people were saying they were the best socks they've ever had, only need one pair, never get cold etc.

So I thought I'd pick up a pair and little did I know the range I'd be confronted with. Looks like they have 3 different socks from about $20 to $33 a pair, then they have a "liner" pair for about $100.

So who has experience with which type and what recommendation do you have?

I use some cabelas brand medium weight wool socks and have never had cold toes. They key is breathable wool. I bet that's what those klim socks are. Either that or a polypropylene blend. Extremely overpriced IMO.

I generally use generic non cotton breathable socks. But after a very minor issue with Motorfist they sent me my choice of a pair of socks for free. Naturally, I picked the most expensive ones they had. I will admit, they are awesome. Comfy warm and breathable.

My regular riding socks are basically no warmer than regular white cotton socks. I never get cold feet with good boots. I have Klim adrenaline and motorfist stomper 2.0 boots. But if you like having toasty feet, I think good socks are probably the way to go. I'm just not sure they are worth the $30 a pair vs $20 for five pairs of cheapo breathable socks to me.

What boots you use might help determine how warm of socks you should get.

well I don't know I was skeptical about the $62 klim underpants. I have to say now when I crap my pants the technical klim underpants don't leek a drop of fecal matter down my leg. and don't get me started on the ability to wick urine

I got my son the least expensive pair of Klimt socks last spring on close out. He has always had cold feet. We'll no more. He has used other socks off and on but nothing keeps his feet warm but the Klimt socks.

Official supplier of the US Ski Team since 1998. Worn these socks with Klim boots for the last 3 yrs. The wife and I really like them.

www.smartwool.com

Checked out that site. Looked under the advocacy link. Has a picture of a tree getting hugged. Probably not a good company to support if you're a snowmobiler.....

Ah Snap. I buy them at Gander Mountain cause they are close to home. I have to drive further to get the Klim socks. Tonight was the first time I had been on their website. I saw the US ski deal and never even thunked to tie them into the tree hugger group.

Nice Heads Up!

I would be careful making that connection/assumption. My family all wear smartwool socks for our outdoor activities, I have yet to find a sock that works better and lasts longer. Those activities include hunting, which smartwool makes socks specifically labeled for hunting, I see that as a good sign. I am careful in supporting companies that are anti hunting, gun or motorized recreation. I have not found anything that shows smartwool to be any of those. The tree hugging in the picture can refer to a couple things, one, that they are a enviromentally friendly company in their manufacturing processes (a good thing) and 2, that they are supporters of the zero trace camping and back packing movement. I am good with that as well. Would certainly be interested if you find out otherwise,

X2. Check out the winter wilderness alliance. 110% directly against snowmobiles. Supported by smart wool. Great socks but can't be an option. If you like them, let them know!

It is hard to not buy outdoor gear that the company doesn't support a group that is against backcountry snowmobiling or something(politics, etc.) that you don't agree with. To go even further a lot of the retailer's selling outdoor gear also support these groups. This is common no matter what you are buying. Best you can do is go with the lesser of the evils.

I agree 100% with you, BUT this organization is so strongly opposed to snowmobiles that it's corporate supporters should be not supported:

http://winterwildlands.org/our-partners/corporate-partners/

Some other groups are opposed to snowmobiling in general as it doesn't fit with their outdoors philosophy, but this group is specifically organized to oppose motorized access to public lands in the winter. Sort of the polar-opposite of the Blue Ribbon Coalition.

Look at some of their goals and "accomplishments":

Our Mission

Winter Wildlands Alliance is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting and preserving winter wildlands and a quality human-powered snowsports experience on public lands.

Our Successes

• In 2013 WWA secured a historic Federal Court Ruling directing the U.S. Forest Service to manage snowmobiles under the same guidelines used for all other off-road vehicles on national forest lands.

• Working with four coalition partners, WWA’s 14-year campaign to protect Yellowstone National Park resulted in a long-term winter use plan that eliminated the noisiest, most polluting vehicles, put a reasonable cap on total over-snow vehicle use and led to a remarkable recovery for the unique winter ecosystem, wildlife and visitor enjoyment in our nation’s first national park and most iconic winter sanctuary.

• WWA is founding member of the Outdoor Alliance. The five membership organizations of Outdoor Alliance have a long tradition of protecting public lands, waters and snowscapes while preserving public access to America’s Outdoors to ensure there are trails to ride, rivers to paddle, peaks to ski and crags to climb.

• Working with local partners, WWA has helped protect more than three million acres of public lands for human-powered activities and for the irreplaceable natural resource values these places provide.

• Created groundbreaking resources such as the Winter Recreation on Western National Forest Lands report and the Winter Trails and Backcountry Use Economic Impact Analysis for the Teton Region.

We exist for you, the human-powered snowsports enthusiast. And we will continue working tirelessly to ensure we all have places to play. Join Us.

Our Story

Formed in 2000, WWA grew out of the recognition that skiers, snowshoers, snowboarders, winter mountaineers and other backcountry adventurers needed a collective voice advocating on issues that impact the winter backcountry. Our work is equally focused on places as on the experiences these places provide, and equally at home in the backcountry as the halls of Congress

There should be no doubt what you are supporting when you buy from these companies. Their intention is to keep you out of the forest. You can't avoid supporting all these companies, but there are better alternatives. For socks, for example, buy something from Wigwam for example if you don't care to spend Klim money - their socks are made in Wisconsin.

*** I just noticed Smart Wool is no longer listed as their corporate sponsor, although they have been before. AND, Outdoor Research is, although they were not when I bought some gloves from them over the summer!

I bought a pair of the Klim socks, they are still in the closet, dont use them, all I use are ankle socks. If you want to try them pick them up on your way north sometime.

Maybe I'll have to do that. Do you remember what type they are? Send me a PM if you want to set something up.
