Lenny, You say your budget does not accommodate a $800 laptop but you will be spending that money for 3 "pc" laptops in a short amount of time. I just retired after 35 years in I.T. 31 years with the same company. The biggest change has been the move away from Windows based anything and to iPads,iPhones because of the apps . Also the move has been to Mac laptops because of the superior performance and far less downtime, viruses and security flaws. Especially for our sales reps who like students are very mobile and the laptop is with them all day under different conditions. PC makers, espcially low end ones install parts that are the cheapest at build time so part consistency is spotty. Apple parts are very very consistent from quality to manufacturer. Apple excels in both the 'Arts' world and the 'Business' world. Its an old stigma they are not business machines. Your right tho it is very much like a Poo vs Doo thing. Like I stated in my first post. I have never had ANY downtime on ANY Apple computer and that includes my sons laptop at DePaul. As a matter of fact I had to order a new Brother Multi-Function printer and it took me longer to un-pack the thing than the flawless install took.

I have a hard time believing that any other pc will fail and I'll spend the same money regardless. Do you work for Apple,,,,,lol. My daughter is responsible and takes good care of her stuff but to spend $1500 on a laptop,,,not gonna happen. Seriously I am not remotely entertaining the idea of a Apple laptop but I do seriously appreciate your posts and advice. I do agree with the fact that Apple is a great product and all that but it's not for us.

here's what Apple really costs: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/searchp...usc=All+Categories&keys=keys&ks=960&saas=saas

Typically the Windows-based machines come in consumer models and business models. If I were you, I'd buy a Dell or Lenovo, but spend a few more bucks and buy the business model. The processors, etc. will be the same but all the hardware and internal electronics are better quality. No reason you shouldn't be able to get 5+ years out of a decent business model PC laptop.

Also keep in mind that the college she attends will likely be able to sell her software for next to nothing, or even give it to her. So I wouldn't spend money on that.

I don't know much about Apple products. I'm sure they're great but I don't see too many in the business world. The exception would be if she wants to be graphic arts or something like that.

thanks, I think I will probably that route, sure makes sense and fits the budget.

Lenny you live in the neighborhood of one of the smartest schools in the midwest. When my laptop crashed I took it to a repair shop in houghton who said the harddrive was junk. On the way home stopped at a friends house who's roomy was a computer science major. He got all the information off of it and replaced the drive for 75 bucks (it was a PC not a mac).

Find a computer science geek who can build you something you need for real cheap. For what it is worth I like Macs even though I don't use all the power. I spent too much time with my personal laptop getting it fixed to get a new non Macbook. We replaced my wifes Emac with a Macbook Pro and it is incredible what that thing can do, it also works really nicely with her Iphone.

Check out the refurbished store on apple.com. I have purchased Imacs, ipads, and ipods thru there. Never any issues.

FWIW - I have beat the snot out of various Dell laptops through the years (for work) and they've never failed me. I think HP makes a solid laptop nowadays as well.

IMO - make sure the laptop has a HDMI out port. This way she can use the laptop as a means to watch various types of TV (online, DVD's, etc.)

Lenny I have more for you just need to find the time to write it all. John made allot of good and real points, others too. Apple and Window both have there place, Graphic Design is apples big one a good windows PC built with the right parts can do the job too. Problem is people look at low end windows and high end apple and try to compare the two, it does not work. You can get a computer that will last for her with the budget you want.

PS For the guys with worried about the virus on a windows computer mine has been going strong for 4 years and still preforms great!
