My comment wasn't aimed at the gentleman with 4K in repairs, it was aimed directly at you for FN up another thread. Sorry to the poster for interrupting this thread, but, yes its just getting old.

No problem. Yeah, mainly trying to get input from those who have owned similar vehicles and have ownership experiences to share.

Hoosier,

We've got both a Honda Odyssey and a Ford Expedition. To compare:

Minivan
- More interior room for stuff. The floor to ceiling space is much larger so you can haul a lot more stuff in the vehicle.
- Easier to get in/out, especially with kids and car seats
- Better, but not great, gas mileage
- "uncool"
- Moderate winter weather capability. (Work pretty well as long as you have decent tires and take it easy but not as good as an SUV. We have driven minivans to northern MN many times without major problems.)
- Moderate towing capability. I wouldn't tow more than a two place with one, and the Chryslers and some Hondas have known tranny concerns.

SUV
- Less interior room for stuff
- Poor gas mileage
- Great towing capability
- Great winter weather capability
- More challenging with kids/car seats. Harder to get around in the vehicle with the seats. More areas for "stuff" to fall out of reach. (Dropped toys, dropped food, etc.)
- More comfortable for a "full house" of passengers. (8 adults can comfortably ride in my Expedition, six adults comfortably in the van.)
- Drivers seat/position more comfortable for me (6'3") than any minvan I've driven
- Easier to park and maneuver

SUV is my daily driver and van is hers. I prefer driving the SUV, but am OK with the van. My wife is happy to drive either. She's really attached to her Odyssey (165k and she still won't talk about getting another one.) In fair weather and day to day the van is easier for the family hauler. In bad weather, towing the trailer, and for comfort I prefer the SUV. Even though mileage isn't great in the van it is still ~50% better than the truck so we tend to take the van for daily driving. We are an active scouting family so I use the SUV as a truck a lot in addition to towing the sleds. Towing trailers, going off road, etc. I’m towing the troop trailer to Virginia on Friday to hike on the Appalachian Trail.

Bottom line: We really like both. If the vehicle is for your wife as a daily driver with the young kids and you won’t need it for towing much I’d go with the van. If you will use it for towing the sleds then I’d go with the SUV, but know you will need a car top carrier and/or hitch rack for those vacations with the kids.

I’d also seriously suggest checking out the Expedition. I’ve had great luck with mine and can’t complain about anything but the gas mileage (which all of the large SUV’s suffer from.) I don’t know anyone who doesn’t love theirs. Look for the EL model if you can find one for more cargo space.

X2, we have an 03 oddessy and 05 Denali XL, agree 100% with the facts given, before I upgraded to the denali, used the van to haul a 2 place up north when going with the wife and kids, we love both vehicles, havent had any problems with either, pushing 100k with both

Honestly I would never hesitate to buy another one. After owning one I don't think we could ever go back. There are too many pluses to having one. I would get the buckets in the middle unless your gonna go three wide with carseats.

I've got the regular length Expedition

I've got the regular length Expedition and there's not much room left with the third row of seats up. Enough for some groceries or misc. stuff but not for strollers, etc. The EL gives you significantly more room behind the back third row, but a van provides much more due to the lower floor. The third row seat in our Odyssey van folds into the floor. When you have it up/in use there is a well left behind the seat so you have from the bottom of the well to the roof. It is much deeper than any of the SUV's.

With three under three I'd definitely recommend the van. You'll want to use the third row of seats and it would be a PIA to swap the kids back there. You really need to flip one of the second row seats forward to access the back to buckle the kids in, and with the high floor you will still be crawling across. Much easier with the low floor and high ceiling of the van. You can duck down and walk back there.

The van isn't fun or cool, but it is extremely functional. I think of ours as an appliance, kind of like a great washing machine. You're never going to get excited about it but you sure appreciate it's functionality, convenience, and reliability.

I had a 2002 Yukon XL which I liked very well. Traded for a 2007 Tahoe, I liked the drive and all of the improvements with the new body style. Upgraded to a 2010 Suburban and the improvements with the six transmission wrt drive-ability is great. It makes for a much nicer drive and easier towing with the integrated brake controller. Only regret is not getting the second row buckets as it is easier to get to the rear seat. I also like the larger size over the Tahoe. I also had a 1995 and 1999 Tahoe and did not have any issues with any of them. They have all been used for some fairly heavy towing (farm tractors, 29' boat) and I prefer them to a 1/2 ton pick up.

2nd row bucket seats

I have the second row buckets in my 2007 Tahoe and had a second row bench in my 2001 Suburban. Wife has 2nd row bench in her 2007 Sequoia. To be honest, I like the bench much better. When we take the Tahoe to the cabin (6 hr drive), the kids can not get comfortable in the buckets. With the bench, they can lay over on a big pillow (or one of the dogs) and sleep. Granted, you can lean the buckets back a little to help, but they sleep much better on the bench seat. When the kids sleep, it is a much more pleasant drive. The kids do appreciate the seat heaters on the buckets.

I was giving mine/our experience with vans, since he asked about vans. I dislike them for many reasons, but the space is second to none. But, you can get all that with a larger SUV (like a suburban)
