Let's Talk About Inversion Tables & Chairs

My back has some lower disk compressions that are causing me major pain and slowing me down big time. I have been on steroids and next phase is a chiropractor and PT. Chiropractor has always helped a lot in the past as well as massage but insurance not friendly towards massage. So I'm thinking ownership of an inversion table or chair may help me a lot. Will insurance cover the purchase of inversion table or chair and what is the learning curve using these devices?

I'm in my mid50's and have dealt with back issues forever it seams, mostly lower back, surgery in my early 30's from an injury, the steroid injections 4 years ago. Back to the topic, I also have hereditary high blood pressure so in inversion thingy was discouraged, I found a device made by one of the companies that you use lying on the floor, it grips your ankles and you decompress by pushing down with your arms, I rather enjoy using it and think it does bring some relief, but my biggest thing is not sitting around very much, it puts too much strain on lower discs, walking, working or lay on the floor.
Teeter Hang-ups P-3 back stretcher.

I do still ride sleds a couple thousand miles a year, and visit my chiropractor monthly, feels good!

I will agree with onlypolar4me, Teeter Hang-Ups inversion tables are the way to go. I have been dealing with back issues since '86, and have dealt with very good chiropractic care since. With numerous visits, & after having seen the Teeter Hang ups commercials, I asked my Chiropractor his thoughts, he told me, "in as much as I hate to say this, and I know I may lose a client, they do work". I bought one, it was wonderful! It does work! I later on down the road, developed a dvt clot in my right leg, NOT related to this wonderful tool and was advised to discontinue it's use by my physician due to the clot. I have regretted getting rid of it since. That thing works! Well made, and well worth the investment. I just may get another.-Mezz

I was done riding because of recurring lower back problems that started many years ago. Looking back the main cause was when I fell off an old Pol RXL at about 80 in the early 90's. The back would go out and I couldn't even tie my shoes. Good customer with chiropracter. He could always get it back but sometimes it would take weeks and many sessions. Any little thing would make it go out again. Then I bought a Teeter. Simply stated it works. I have not seen my chiro in years. Onlypolar is right though - if you have high blood pressure you shouldn't use one. However you can get most of the benefits of the teeter by not going full inversion. As in totally upside down. Just go about 3/4. It still helps. On another note I have been very active this summer cutting down and hauling a bunch of trees at my residence. I have lost about 10 lbs and my back feels great. Just throwing that out there.

Pete, 1st...trade that Yami for a beautiful Cat, you feel instant relief..... on a serious note....I had lower back pain and tried many different avenues, nothing helped. A friend of mine suggested I visit a chiropractor (never been to one) so I did....on my third visit, the chiropractor tore my cerebral artery between C2-C3 at the base of my skull causing a massive cerebella stroke. During my half year of PT every other day, my trainer guy taught me non-evasive back stretching and exercises that has taking all my back pain away 100%.... the stoke has totally changed my life ... I don't wish on anyone.... I went in for a lower back pain, and now have way worse permanent issues..... be careful.

OMG - too funny. Apex ruined his back.
Take heed Mr. Dust - antiquated suspensions, hazardous to your health. Worse than cigarettes or Gentlemen Jack.
Cheers

Holy sheet Shelby, I've heard things about Chiropractors, but that's a total nightmare. Hope you're on the road to recovery.

About 26-27 years ago, I threw my lower back out at a first softball practice of the season. Went to a chiropractor and the x-ray revealed my discs were worn down into the shape of eggs, at age 25. Plus I had actually twisted my two lowest vertebrae. Over the course of 4-5 weeks, he straightened me out, and set me up with three simple exercises/stretches to help keep things loose. He told me if I ever become sedentary, I was doomed. To this day, I do the stretches before any ride, golf outing, or anything that may put stress on my back. I have "pulled" a muscle or two since then, but diligent stretching has corrected the issue. As long as I don't sit or stand in the same place for more than a few minutes, I'm good. Yeah, I'm a bit of a wiggler now, and probably will be the rest of my life. Snowmobiling has actually become one of my best outlets, as it requires constant movement on the seat, at least the way I ride.

Oh yeah Ingrid told me of your issues and told me NO neck cracking ...wow that was unfortunate and not suppose to happen to people you know.:( I'm hoping just a bit of lower back manipulation will get me back to normal. Recently my boat lift cable broke and I did a lot of stupid heavy lifting of lifts, boats, trailers moving stuff in and out of garage like I was 18 years old. You know how it is when you break a lift cable got to get on it right now to avoid boat damage. My back was squawking before that but that incident brought me down had to see doc and still not right so chiropractor next. Stretching used to help me but have not done much for about 2 years and not getting me back to normal.

Do insurance companies pay for these inversion tables if medical doctor writes a prescription? I pay so much for health insurance and would like to get some ROI from the policy!

whitedust, highly unlikely the insurance would cover it & more unlikely an MD would recommend it as most are unfamiliar with them. FWIW, it was the best $400 (including the inversion boots) I ever spent. I don't think you would regret it, just don't fall for any off brand type inversion table, go with the Teeter, well built & well worth the money.-Mezz

I'm in the Medicare zone now + full supplemental and Medicare paid for a bunch of wheelchairs and stuff for my Mom and Dad so wondering if the teeter can qualify too. I'll ask my doc but not sure he knows. That's why I'm asking here so much knowledge with JD membership and calling Medicare is a drag not sure they know... lol. I'm trying to use the system but better to know from someone that has experience than pioneer myself.

All new to me but I'll do the injections if that helps...today is better yesterday not so good and I get cracked on Thursday lots of activity this weekend including waterskiing so I hope I get some relief. If not I have lots of beer on hand and will get inversion table on order. I'll do all I can do until pain puts me out. I'm used to pain so usually can push thru most things but this was bad made me want to puke while pushing thru....That pissed me off!
