Lost Art of Changing Your Own Oil?

I thought this was common knowledge , but reading some of these post, I would say its not. Bulk oil used at these oil change places is not the same as what you buy in the auto part store. There is a ton of recycled being used at them. You can get rid of your old oil at the auto parts store. Last I herd, waste motor oil is selling for over a buck a gallon. What kind of filter are they using? The filter is kind of important .

Where did you get a "say not" out of any of this? Getting rid of the oil is an issue and the mess is an issue. My oil comes out of plastic jugs and I specify the filter. My dealer heats his place on used oil and uses the discount oil changes as a means of getting me in to his showroom. We shoot the ****and sometimes he sells me a new fleet truck. Other times I just get a deal. That's the game and how it is played.

Then you go right in and get that 16$ oil change, and fleet truck. Sounds like your getting a great deal???maybe the company I work for has been doing this all wrong. We have been going to to Detroit to buy 10to 20 trucks a year. So your saying, we should go to the oil change place for a fleet program ? Can you also explain why your bud is burning waste oil, when nat gas is 1/2 the cost? Please school me,"o" great one.

....... Dont get fooled by a tool.

Just had a change done $23 total. No way I'm crawling under for that. After 10 - 12,000 hard miles any clean oil and filter is a good thing

Valvoline rapid oil change. Pull in, 10-15 min. don't even have to get out of the car. Plus they double check other stuff. tire pressure, air filter, coolant , tranny, fill washer fluid. 30 bucks. By the time you stop and grab everything you need to do it for 15-20 bucks, dink around putting the car on the ramps, heat up the garage, put on garage clothes, change it, then try to dispose of the waste oil, you are way way ahead. Unless your time is worth absolutely nothing to you. You do however have to keep a keen eye on them and make sure they don't miss anything but the one by my house is very good and I know a bit about cars so they would never try and suggest something I didn't need.

Oh and here is another thing that will start a fight! You absolutely DO NOT have to change your oil every 3000 miles even if you don't run synthetic
I go 5000. multiple cars and put 200k them. Never had an engine related failure in 20 years

(disclaimer doesn't apply to super heavy towing or tons of dirt road running.)

Well put snover1

I still do all my own oil changes including the lawn mower. Even though I can have it done for cheaper than I can buy the stuff, I've worked in the business too long to know what kind of clowns work in the quick lube lane. Its worth the extra money for a little piece of mind.

I am also teaching my 16 year old to do it, and I make him pay for it himself. He is not really a gear head and doesn't have much interest, but I'll be damned if any kid of mine can't at least change his own oil or a tire!

Well put. My two kids have been on my garage working I whatever project we have at task. Maybe I'm too old school but I think if you know how stuff works you won't get screwed over as much in life. Too many people trying to "upsell" you something plus it's pretty cool (for me) when the kids able to fix things for others

My oldest is close to getting his drivers license and I went out of my way to find something with stick shift as that seems to be a lost art as well. I'm on a volunteer fire dept. One of the old trucks is a stick I'm shocked at how many "young guys" can't drive it.

It may end of taking more time or coasting me more but I truly believe in being self sufficient and really try to teach my kids that as well.

I grew up working in my Dad's service station and changed more oil and filters etc. than I can remember. However, I haven't done it for decades. I just got home from getting my oil changed and guess who did it in the picture below in 7 degree weather?

I was his assistant and one moment it was "get me a 1/2" wrench" and then next it was "another Creamy Dark please!" ;)
