Lost my hunting buddy today

My 11 year old springer spaniel got sick on Tuesday. Vet had a hard time figuring out what was wrong with him. It almost seemed like he had a stroke. Come to find out it was some sort of muscular disease that affects the esophagus and motor skills so he couldn't walk or keep food and water down. There was really nothing we could do so I decided to have him put to sleep. Shot a lot of pheasants over him, and just had him in South Dakota in November.

Gonna miss you Buster.

Happy hunting in the big sky!

I am so sorry for your loss. They are like family. All I can say, from experience, is that each day will get a little easier. My heart goes out to you.

Having owned bird dogs all my life, absolutely one of the hardest things to do is to decide when to say when. NOBODY has seen what you both had together...nobody.

Having said that and many dogs down, I can tell you that it isn't easy to put him down but you can bet your best shotgun that he would do the same for you without hesitation if the tables were turned and he had to decide for you. His loyalty to you is unbounded, beyond measure.

I hope you got some pics of him on point, or doin the birdy dance....those pics can help get you past the hard moments as your body heals from the loss. I know cause I have half a wall of them. Not a day passes that I see those pics and remember a crafty rooster, pat, or sage grouse that took a little extra to find and pin down....Each unique, and each with memories that fold into the brain sometimes with clarity that scares me.

Dwell not on his death, but the times of your life that you had together, and remember what a pal he was, and the places you got to go together.

It helps....and the hurt will fade away.

I think God gives us our pets so we can
know a bit of the love he has for us.
Sorry to hear about your loss.

Having to put a dog down just rips up a person. I got the shivers down my back when I read your post as remembrance of the pain it brings. They are family....hang in there.

I feel your pain last year my oldest springer K.C. Chasem' passed away in my arms, he suffered from a stroke and was a trooper for a week, then he gave up. I now have 2 half sister spanials, Maggie and Mattie that are starting to show their age, 12 years young and it makes me sick to know that I will have to make the decission to put them to rest, I pray that the good Lord will just let them pass in their sleep, I'm taking everyday as 1 day at a time, and love them to death do us part. I will still have my youngest, Rocky I hope for many more years. Hang in there and hold those memories in your heart. Peace be with you.

Even though I know it will always make me fight back tears, I feel compelled to read about how much people's dogs meant to them and how hard it is to lose them. I guess it's a reminder of how special our little friends are.

For some people the loss is just too painful so they just give up. In the most painful moments, this thought has crossed my mind but then I think about the good times and the joy all of our dogs have given us. Every one of our dogs has been very special and in our hearts they always will be but I also know that there are dogs looking for a warm, happy home so we eventually welcome a new, eager family member. Hopefully you will do the same.

My thoughts are with you....

This is the bad part of the deal as far as pet ownership. I have had many dogs during the course of my life and would not have it any other way. We had a year gap the last time we had to put down our yellow lab. A year was way too long and we bounced back and purchased a new puppy. Many great memories from pets that have passed. What they bring to the table as far as companionship and loyalty is hard to match. New baby in pic and she loves snow!!!

Wow....I can't really add anything to the many wise words already written here. I know this pain all too well myself, and I feel for you. My condolences.
