Sorry

I'm a huge dog lover and these stories always pull at my heart strings! It's a shame that our furry friends don't live longer than they do, but the unconditional love a dog gives is just amazing. May you find comfort in the many memories you have! :)

Sprry for your loss, I too have had to help make that tough decision of letting a beloved pet go in the past few years, and it never gets any easier. I have always loved this poem and hope it helps. RIP Buster

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Nothing says how much you miss your pet until you get another one that looks exactly like it. Go for a new pup and experience the pleasers all over again.

So sorry for your loss of your best buddy. Losing a fur child just plain sucks! I lost a Dobe 3 years in a row. Just remember you did the right thing and he isn't suffering anymore. Remember the good times you spent together. snowbuff: hope your Dobe's surgery went well, what was it? zrgrl: thanks for posting the Bridge poem, I send this to my fellow dog people who have lost their best friend.

Having owned bird dogs all my life, absolutely one of the hardest things to do is to decide when to say when. NOBODY has seen what you both had together...nobody.

Having said that and many dogs down, I can tell you that it isn't easy to put him down but you can bet your best shotgun that he would do the same for you without hesitation if the tables were turned and he had to decide for you. His loyalty to you is unbounded, beyond measure.

I hope you got some pics of him on point, or doin the birdy dance....those pics can help get you past the hard moments as your body heals from the loss. I know cause I have half a wall of them. Not a day passes that I see those pics and remember a crafty rooster, pat, or sage grouse that took a little extra to find and pin down....Each unique, and each with memories that fold into the brain sometimes with clarity that scares me.

Dwell not on his death, but the times of your life that you had together, and remember what a pal he was, and the places you got to go together.

It helps....and the hurt will fade away.

Hey everyone, thanks for the replies. I really means a lot. Boondocker, when I read your reply the other day the tears just rolled down my cheeks, but I sure felt better after that! I took him to South Dakota in November and the last day I hunted with him I got three birds in about 20 minutes. One of the retrieves he made was 15-20 yards out in the water, the old dog still had it in him. My last hunt with him was one of the best ever, so I have some great memories. There will be a new pup in the next couple of months with new excitement and more memories!

DC, something for you to consider:

Last fur kid I had to put down was 4 years ago. I took a bunch of the pictures I had of him and made them into a DVD slideshow complete with music background (I used Roxio Easy Media Creator but I'm sure there are a number of programs that could do it). I still watch it from time to time and still get a little teary -- but it also gives me lots of smiles.

We've since gotten a new guy who I love just as much, but we call him Simba's "successor" -- there's never such a thing as a "replacement".
