Mercer Area Conditions

Any road and grade trail has snow on it and is smooth at long as a groomer has run it, however, any short connecting trail or any trail through any swamp is soft, short of snow and nothing but moguls. They need snow and they need cold.

We came home from the Mercer/Hurley area today after arriving on Friday. Agree with blkhwkbob. We encountered a huge waterhole on 13 north after Beavers Resort and moguls on 9C leading to the flowage. The 2 mile stretch leading south of The Lazy Ace was terrible as usual. We were able to log about 325 miles in 2 1/2 days so it was good. The cold and snow are coming, but without new snow, the trails will be getting pretty thin.

I stayed in manitowish waters this past Thursday-Sunday, everyone was grooming except for boulder. Did not ride trail 10 to flowage or 12 stayed on grade to north of pine lake, everything looks pretty good except a couple small stretches in low swampy areas but they are working on them. Trail 8 east of pine lake to beavers lodge and south to Winchester via circle Lilly and 19/20/14 all good. We rode 350 miles in two days no complaints except by boulder. PI was awesome no bumps,no dirt, groomed.
Everything should be good to go by this weeekend. Have fun. I'm going to st Germaine this Thursday- Monday should be up to excellent with this snow forecast.

Thanks for the update. One of my favorite stretches of trail is from Pine lake over to beaver lodge. Wide and big sweeping turns lots of for the few miles of trail it is.

By looking at the Mercer cam the grade is almost down to dirt...... sad after such a great start! It does look like cold and snow will be coming back in 2 days! I wonder how the base held up in the woods??

I heard from guy that lives up there near great northern that for sure rain gave them a good blow. Icy and thin in spots but if they get a little bit of snow they should be back in business. Hoping they get at least a bit for our club trip coming up next weekend.

One of my club trips is the week after yours so I would hope things would shape up by then

Yeah, all the local clubs are reporting the same....basically near unrideable conditions. Our club trip at Great Northern was supposed to be tomorrow through Sunday. A buddy and I are heading to Houghton Sunday through Wednesday instead.

Anyone have a report for the area after the weekend? Did Mercer end up getting any snow? I know that Hurley got 4-5" of new snow not sure if lake effect made it that far south. I know they are supposed to get some today with the clipper system that is rolling through. Planning on arriving Wednesday night through the weekend for our club trip kind of committed now with the group that we have coming up.

Ryan had a buddy in Mercer this weekend, and said they were fair to good. He was surprised hoe good they were considering all the reports last week and they rode 150-200 miles a day. North and west were the best he said of Mercer.

The stretch on 8 between M/Waters and corridor 17 has been rough all year due to groomers can't get in there because swamps still have not frozen up. A tough 8 miles and 17 was showing some wear but I think the snow today has helped a lot.

Yeah I know that section by the lazy ace has been brutal the last couple years with that swamp. I think it is growing haha.

They definitely could use some more snow now after this weekend. We found some pretty good riding on Thursday and Friday. Of course there was some icy corners and rocks on the grade but overall trails were in pretty decent shape. But by Saturday the traffic beat them up pretty bad. I would be hesitant to go up again for a ride this weekend unless they get some fresh snow.

Thanks for the report Ryan, leaving Wed morning staying on the Flowage. Sounds like maybe 2-4" Monday night and Tues so hopefully they get the higher amount. The storm keep pushing north so who knows.

If they got 2-4" they will be okay until Saturday with the good job they do grooming. Seemed like Saturday was the killer for Mercer and areas nearby. Just couldn't hold up to the traffic with the minimal snow that they had. We found pretty decent trails north and west once your get away from Mercer, Hurley, etc.
