MI Trail Permit Price Increase

I remember when the price was $25 for the trail pass. My opinion is that it is definitely for a good cause so the money is worth it! The price increase is less than $1 per year for this next 5 year plan. Michigan does a very good job with their trails so the amount of money for the trail pass is working well for the trail system.

20 years ago it was only ten bucks. WI didn't even have trail permits then. It's still a good deal for a whole season, but it makes it tough on those people who only ride a little bit in the Yoop.

The MI DNR offers 2 wk ends a year when no fishing license is required and also a couple wk ends of free entry into State Parks. DNR is still kicking around the idea of how to include a free wk end(s) when no trail permit is required. I think its a good idea and should happen.

They spent quite a bit of money this past year buying permanent trail easements, which is where a good chunk of the trail permit funds were supposed to go when they initially jacked up the prices. Getting use of these funds, which were paid by snowmobilers for this specific purpose, has been an enormous challenge unfortunately given the powers that be in MI. However, in my view that is a great investment.

After my first year of being actively involved with a club and seeing some of what it costs to groom I’m amazed the sticker is only $52. The cost for my club per run would have to be $150- $200 and there is 2 runs a day one north/south and 1 west/east, and that is just fuel and driver cost don’t have all costs including maintenance and building costs. So I have gotten a whole new respect for clubs and even how dnr get this done for us every year.

Pardon the pun but fuel costs are a "drop in the bucket". Operating 4 groomers over the last 10 years, fuel represents about 8% of overall expense compared to around 51% for equipment purchases.

No doubt, I just really started being involved with the club this year so do know a lot about all of the finances but using that much fuel was amazing to me.
