Never ridden in Minnesota, but a group of us are wanting to ride somewhere. Is it worth the rode trip? Where do we want to go?

don't know about other parts of town but I have been riding around the house Mound MN Luce line trail is prob the one that would show up on a map.
lakes and swamps not frozen so lots of dead ends
I think I would not drive more than a hr to ride this part of town. but from what I understand bit more west north west bit more snow We have 10 today after compacting overnight had 13 at one point.
was deff enough snow to have the M8 out for some ditch running.
look up southwest trails and northwest trails for maps prob on line.
don't know about snow but Chaska is just 15 min south of me and prob best trails in the area around the river.good size lot to park just off 44 i think.
from there U can head N west to Norwood Young America further west u go the more fields U get but the southwest trails has a ultra fine disk that they run through the farm fields so they are not littered with huge frozen dirt chunks.
Rummer Has it some nice Illegal Urban Boondocking in the marshy area in the park in chaska also a gravel pit just off the trail that if one was willing to go in to would prob make for some fun.
worth driving more than a hr or 2 ? only u can say I can tell U I have driven allot longer with high hopes and false trail reports .
from what I understand latter in the week chance of more snow if that is the case I say load up.
I had a lap full of snow a few times today from snow coming over the hood in the wind blown ditch

Thanks, Ezra! Think I'd drive 10+ hrs at this point for ridable snow. Thanks for the details on where to ride/ unload, don't know the area, so very helpful. I'll keep an eye on the forecast and if things pan out, maybe I'll see you on the trails.

Thanks ezra.... Were driving from Chicago. We will watch the weather this week before we make a decision. That twitch in the thumb makes you do some crazy things.

6.5 from chi town. to me not worth it with out lakes and swaps frozen 2.5 hr I would prob do it not 6 to7.
if more snow comes then could be worth the ride but I dont think much grooming is going to get done before swamps get ice

I am in Lakeville on south side of metro. We are riding trails but they weren't groomed yet, hopefully they did them last night. As Ezra said, the problem is that a lot of the trails have portions that go over lakes or swamps, which is not an option yet. From what I can tell, you could have good riding south and west of the cities area. Take a look at maps for lakes to stay away. Either way, there are a lot of trails and you should be able to get around lakes, so if you want to ride, this may be good option.

I live in Chaska, but usually only ride from my cabin in Chetek. We have about 10 inches and there is rideable snow if you head west towards Waconia, Young America. Like others have said, swamps and lakes are not froze, so you will run into dead ends. Most of the sledding now is ditch banging or trails that go over farm fields. You can ride this but I would not drive 6-7 hours to ride this.

Riding in south metro

There is 10 inches of lite fluffy snow so its early seasons conditions. once it settles or packed down. if not it goes right to the ground no base. Ditch riding hay fields are smooth. plowed fields are rough. you want to ride and have a trail sled i say go for it sacred heart mn 17.5 inches . I got the dust off my mountain sled gave the kids a ride. cThe lake rivers creeks are not frozen be safe. sled 2013.jpg

Just got back from a 45 mile lunch break. We ride!

(No grooming/panning in Lakeville yet)

I totally understand that you want to ride but I'm not sure it would be worth your time and effort. As previously stated lakes and swamps are not frozen by any means and a lot of trails utilize swamps or wet lands. Also, most trails are not groomed yet and may not even be open. Plowed fields are super rough as the groomers haven't gone over them yet.
Maybe one thought would be to jump out to the MN DNR site, check out trail maps, look for the main corridor trails specifically rail bed as the would be the smoothest. Might be a bit boring but it would be the best trails.

after today and the sun and 38 I WOULD NOT DO IT! any place a track spun to dirt is growing fast roads now all clear not worth a drive of more than a hr or so.

I agree, after yesterday conditions aren't good at all. Between settling and melting snow pack is down to only 6''. Mostly bare ground on trails that are across fields. They are forecasting freezing rain late friday turning to snow mid-day Saturday.

ezra- I will try to make the party at Monie's. We are hoping to close on our new house in Buffalo next week, and eager to meet some new riding friends!
