I hope this is not too political but my take on this is that common sense gun laws make sense and anyone who want to buy a gun should have to pass a proficiency and safety test similar to going through driver training before you can get a drivers' license. This, although, won't help those to don't abide by the laws, but still makes sense to me. Also, as with any problem, you have to address the root cause of the problem before you can begin to fix it. In business, if we have a problem, to fix it, we have to address to root cause to fix it. With crimes involving guns, to me, the root cause is not an inanimate piece of metal. The gun doesn't seem to be the root cause, but rather a tool to carry out the crime. The root cause is much more complex and difficult to tackle and it's amazing to me that I rarely hear ANY politician mention the root cause of those who commit crimes with guns. It's difficult and complex, but unless we direct our focus at the root cause, all the gun laws and restrictions in the world won't do much to reduce crimes using guns. Again, I'm trying to keep politics out of this and trying to instill some basic common sense.
