Munising area DNR on the prowl

We all know what DNR stands for so I won't revisit. I had a run-in a couple of times over the years, but mostly in summer. Kid had a nice dirtbike to ride on local trails in ER area, and once he got confident of riding alone, I thought he could just run the snowmobile trails along 70, into the forest over to 7N. Heck they let you ride your cars to get to deer stands, so what's the diff. Anyway, they stopped the 10 year old kid on the trail, made him park the TTR-90 and gave him a ride home. I had to go back with the trailer, load it up and bring it home. When I told the guy how ridiculous that was, he was ready to get in my face and go gestapo on me, so I turned around and walked into the cottage.

Isn't the minimum age for riding alone 12? Plus he was riding in area he wasn't suppose to be? No wonder he made him park it.

So you noticed the trail permit wasn't on it when you rented it, but did not question where it was? Also, did you ask Headwaters to pay the fine when you took the sled back?

We rented from Heckel's once in Eagle River (I think they are long gone now), probably 10 years ago, and was told the sleds were fully permitted for WIS or UP. Well one of them wasn't. The DNR ended up calling Heckel's and gave them an earful, but we didn't end up with a ticket. If I remember right, Heckel's didn't actually buy MI permits but most of their rentals eventually got one from renters. Of course that was back when the permits were like $20 or something.

The DNR Agent noticed it, not me. I guess I was too busy looking for damage instead so I would not get blamed when I returned.

To continue some of the famous MI DNR pullover story's, I got a ticket 4 years ago for running a missing stop sign amidst the "mass city trap". Leaving town heading south on 3, I fly across a road and think to myself man they should really have a stop sign at that road, as it was a plowed forest road. Next road crossing (which does have a stop sign!) There the DNR officer sits. Just told me I missed the last stop sign and starts writing the ticket asap. I kindly asked what the name of the road was because there was only 1 road between here and town, and the stop sign is currently missing, which is why me and my buddy blew through it. He just ignored me, that's when I started fuming, yes, a 17 year old in a heated argument with a DNR officer... which ended with I'm writing the both of you 1 ticket which you can split, do you want to make it 2?!? Instead of carrying on our way south, before the officer took off I said were going back the way we came, to take another look at the missing stop sign, you can see it if you want. Ignored... I hate when people say screw the police, they just want your money. They are out there doing their job and making sure you abide by the law but to this day this DNR officer has left a sour taste in my mouth... the ticket was $130, $65 a person, and gas was $4 a gallon so the last thing 2 teenagers were going to do is skip school and drive 4 hrs to go fight a $130 ticket in court.

The issue wasn't the age - he might of been 9-10, I don't remember exactly when it was. They said there were renegade ATV riders using closed trails, and somebody called in. Vilas does not allow ATV's on trails in summer.

So if he was using the trails illegally why would you get in his face for doing his job? I don't understand how people can break the law and bitch when they get caught? ? Kinda like when an officer involved shooting happens and someone makes a sign that says. Every time my son robs a store I shouldn't have to worry about him being shot? If that's what the world is coming too we are in trouble.

Well that was then...Now I believe Atvs are allowed on some trails in Eagle River. I do believe Atvs can drive thru town on snomo trail. Vilas is a very confusing place when it comes to Atvs since the county has left it to each town to determine Atv use. Phelps has a road route in & out of town & to Forest county. Is is it fun to ride paved roads on Atvs?....not to me ..lol

Ahhh, I don't want to sound like a smart azz, because I know there's some sensitive peeps around here, but DUHHH, I had NO idea you couldn't ride a dirt bike on a trail in the summer. It wasn't comprehensible or logical to me. It was a couple years after I bought the place. During deer season there's trucks and cars all over the trails - 2nd week November. The biggest reason for not being able to use a trail year round is because it's private property. You wouldn't want someone riding past your windows at 2 am would you? For years and years clubs putting together a snowmobile trail system would get landowners permission to cross their land from December 15th until March 31st. After March 31st the trails would close and use of the trail is considered trespassing does not matter how much snow was still on the ground closed was closed. It's always hard to get permission for a trail but with seasonal cabins and the fact that during cold weather windows are closed controlling the noise factor people would agree to a trail. During the summer people are using their seasonal cabins and Windows are open and it's much harder to get people to agree to allow the traffic or noise across their land. With all of the ATV'S around caution has to be used or snowmobile trails will end up paying the price.

the mixing of these trails are gonna end UP being a problem..its only a matter of time..they need to be separate

and that has nothing to do with my real feelings about the original topic..i cant believe the pressure i felt this year..i go to mass becuz i can ride in peace..well things have changed i fear..hopefully just becuz of the lack of snow and concentration of riders(and of course the idiots killing themselves on trees)

The DNR man I had been fined by about eight years ago was a royal freekin douche-bag!
He pulled me over on trail 3 in front of the DNR building as I was renting a piece of crap 2-stroke 488 fan (my sled sold late in the year) from Headwaters two miles away. The trail permit that goes on the windshield was missing and the DNR douche said it was my responsibility to make sure it was in place. I asked; "hey here is my rental paperwork, please call Headwaters and give them the fine", he said "no", here is a fine. It was clear to me this guy was out to fine anyone and everyone with zero leniency (consequently, I banned Watersmeet from my money for 4 years) he was just sick of snowmobilers it seemed.

Well, that was just the beginning of my problems as I decided to fight the ticket in court (Gogebic County court in Wakefield), being a resident of Green Bay, Wi I thought court would be reasonable place to discuss my ticket. WRONG; the court and Magistrate reminded me of Valkenvania from the movie Nothing but trouble. The magistrate was a complete tool "I later researched what it took to be a magistrate in MI overseeing vehicle court and he only needed to take a test after reading a book, worse yet to oversee civil matters he needed zero credentials". What a joke, no Attorney experience needed. I cringe for the people of the U.P. who are at the whim of "The Magistrate" that is interpreting the law by his own perception of a book or personal experience.

Anyway, if you get a ticket for anything in the U.P., pay the fine and save yourself some grief (or laughter depending on your mood).

hahaha watersmeet...that's a banned riding place....theres a bar there that the locals get paid an amount for drinks if they turn in some visitors to the tribal police for drinking or taking that trail they point you to which is down the road which is illegal...when the real trail is behind the gas station...watersmeet and the Indians are and have been a huge scam machine for 30 years....I thought everyone knew this


and the stop sign thing....that's a laugh too...in between conover and phelps is a straight railroad shortcut thru to towns but is a sled trail....the cops or DNR or whoever are in that area policing setup a portable stops sign in the middle to get you for speeding and check reg's and drinking...I love blowing thru those stops signs with 10 guys or so all going over 100mph...they never have gotten that sled outta the back of the pickup yet... in time....love blowing thru those fake stop signs and the one in eagle river and then sending them on a wild goose chase after sleds....too funny...there is a whole list of these places and traps


the one in Munising....the guy popped out from behind an outcropping of rocks with a radar gun just before a 25mph area into town....I love pegging his needle on that gun and then laughing at RED GREEN trying to catch us all...fun stuff I tells ya
