Need input on project

My 03 SKS 800 has been totaled by my insurance co. I bought it back and have about $2700.00 to make the repairs myself. It needs new tunnel and handle bar. Fabcraft has a tunnel for 1000.00. I was also thinking some trailing arms from them also. I was also thinking a Boss seat would be cool too. Any other ideas.

Ouch!

CatDog:

Part it out,... Make 1500 or more on it, add that to the 2700 cash,...
and put a down payment on your dream sled.

Think Snow!

what happened to it?

how many miles on the motor, big vins idea might not be a bad idea if the miles are up there.

I agree with BigVin. Putting that type of effort and money into an obsolete (non-rider forward) sled seems counter productive, unless for some reason you're really attached to it. No matter what you do to this sled, it won't it even come close to a rider forward chassis.

He never said he wanted ride forward. Obsolete is such a negative word to make you think you need new all the time. A edge sks is a great sled for side hilling and all around off trail riding, thats what a SKS is for. I would do what Bigvin said. sled is pretty old. use money towards a new Poo RMK Pro. The parts you have will fit most 01-05 some 06 models so there is a market for your parts. I would be interested in the motor.

I was crossing a street and didn't see the car and it just caught the back of tunnel with the passenger side front end. Like Vin said nice down payment on a dream sled but thats it. I really don't want to finance a toy. It does have 7500 miles on it, but I was going to freshen up the eng. this summer anyways.

part it out. buy something used then. you will have a ton of time in changing out the tunnel. aligning everything up, etc. not for everyone to do. I did a tunnel change out on an 03 700 RMK. brought little resale since new serial numbers had to be engraved in tunnel. people want original tunnel serial number stamps or they know it has been totaled. If the motor had 3000 miles on it and you have all the tools and time neccesary for a summer time project then I would do it. If you got the JOB, wife, kids and a lawn to mow then part it out, you got enough to do already. Who knows the rails may be twisted and you don't know until you pull suspension out. Point is costs can far exceed the repairs worth.

I'm confused - you state that he said he never wanted a rider forward chassis, but then you recommend he buy a rider forward chassis??? Obsolete is not and was not meant to be negative, it is simply factual.

Anyway, I can certainly understand not wanting to finance a toy, so, in that case, good luck with the rebuild and post some pictures when you're done so we can see what you came up with.

Sorry to confuse you. I was stating what I would do. Ride forward is way over stated for me. Had a few. They make my knees hurt after about 60 miles of trail riding. For off trail (boondocking) riding an edge works great. If he wants to do some serious mtn. riding and money is not an issue then go with the RMK Pro. I just would not fix that sled unless you can chop off just enough tunnel and replace with a tunnel extension. changing out everything up front and moving to a new tunnel is a ton of work. The sled is worth more in parts than it is whole. You got a good start for a replacement from the insurance. How much was the buy back?

$315.00 bought it back. I love this sled and I don't ride trail to often mostly two tracks, seasonal road and boondocking, so I'm standing up most of the time so ride forward not a big deal. This sled is quick, powerful and nimble for a 144. I really don’t want to see it go. It has some extras modification done to it. I was looking for input on what I could do to trick it out some more. I have the time and tools to make the repairs be it new tunnel or OEM chassis. I enjoy a challenge and the gratification when it’s completed. Thanks all for your input (keep then coming) and I will keep you all posted on what I decide to do.

Boss seat is a must. Had one on my 02 Edge 136" and it was the best mod by far. Check out http://vanamburgonline.com/catalog/index.php?manufacturers_id=10. They also make tunnels that are pretty trick. Snowest might be another area to check for tunnels. Alot of chassis stuff for the edge rmk/sks's on there for sale. Good luck. Just saw a 2010 Polaris rmk 600 144 on craigslist for $6k with like 800 miles on it. Just an idea! Its in Deer Park WI.

I would do what PR1 says. Chop tunnel, and do a tunnel extension. Sell, and get rider forward sled w/lower miles.

Well I got it back together. I bought an edge chassis with a Fabcraft tunnel already installed, plus a Boss seat for $650.00 and a few other parts for another $200.00. I must say I have gone through an emotional roller coaster the last six months, from being glad I’m alive, to if I was going to have a sled to ride and back to I’m glad I’m alive to ripe around my yard tearing up sod having people driving by staring at me like I some kind of nut.

That's a good question, I didn't see any vin# on it. I was just going to use my same reg. I used before.
