Does anybody know how many there needs to be?

26 a side I believe. Do not put it back togerher until they are all accounted for. They like to hide in the case. Been using caged for years and had my first caged bearing failure couple weeks ago.

what do you mean you cant find ?lost on the bench for sure or may be in the crank case it is not like that crank dose not already have enough issues with out a bearing bouncing around

Murphy's law for sure, get the magnet out as said above. I never had a problem with caged either. Been doing top ends with Western or other cheap no name kits, never built a grenade. Only bought those " Austria " pistons for my POO once. 1 time years ago, I had the cylinders & heads off my 440 Cat sent to D&D ( what a joke ) , my daughters were 4 or 5, and they wanted me to start up the sled. Like a hooplehead, I was happy to oblige, pulled the recoil and BAM... I suddenly got that " sinking feeling " ( #$%@* ) X2... I had to get the aluminum magnet out that day =:)..... Murphys Law again !

Already took the magnet to the case, and none in there, If he didn't throw them away I will count them up.

28 bearings each side,as stated account for all of them before reassembly. They will wreck your motor if they get in the water passages(lock up water pump)or down in the crank. I reused the bearings on my buddies 700 several years ago still running strong.
