New 4s Or 2s Sleds Purchased This Year.

Mike, what info can you give on ski's. I've heard there can be some darting issues with the stock ski's and if that turns out to be true for my sled I'd like to correct that rather then deal with it. Most of my riding will be done on groomed trails so the answer may be in changing out the carbides? Any advice is appreciated. Good plug for the wingdingers Doug.

Dean,

You are correct. The stock Yamaha ski's are among the worst in the industry. Here is a quick summary of what I know:

Simmons flex ski Gen 1 - A little harder to steer at slower speeds but when going through the woods at higher speeds 35 -40 they steer with little to no effort. No Darting at all with these. They do suffer a little in slushy conditions.

C&A Razors - Steer heavy but rail nicely.

C&A XT - Steer heavy but rail decent and decent off trail.

Curve XS - A really nice aggressive ski without the steering effort. They track great but aren't as "grabby" as the C&•••, no darting, decent off trail.

USI X2 - Easier steering, good tracking, some darting, decent flotation

Pilot 6.9 - Same as the USI X2 except a little less darting.

So anyway. That's where I am at on ski's. I do mostly trail and lake riding. If I did more off trail stuff I would be looking at the Yamaha mountain skis and the Powder Hounds as well.

You probably know if you saw my post (new sled new direction) that I picked-up a 2010 XTX. The reasons are as fallows, long track; better on rough trails, better off trail, four stroke engine will last longer(MORE MILES) than 2 stroke, sounds cool too, no more injection oil, Yamaha builds a quality piece, Factory rep. sugested taller winshild & deflectors,(got those) and maybe mountain skis if going off trail alot, will be looking at those eventually. sorry about the run-on sentance.

Duel runner carbide will get rid of the darting if you don't want to spend $$ on new ski's. They worked fine for me last year but I'am looking for a better ski for off trail.

One dually on the right ski and a single carbide on the left and there will be zero darting issues! I put the dually on the right side to protect it a little more when riding the side of the road. I ride trail and lakes only and have never had a reason to buy different ski's.

cobalt, as mentioned above, I've got an 09 Nytro XTX and I want to take your advice on the dual carbide just on the right side. My question to you, or anyone here who has a similar sled, The Nytro come stock with a 3" carbide only. What do you suggest for the dual? 4"? I don't want to over do it and then have issues with it. Thanks for the help!

On the XTX, you'll definitely want to get rid of the stock carbides right away - they're a little short and don't last long. My darting is about completely gone just by adding Bergstrom 8" Triple Point carbides...those along with shimming the back of the ski rubber with a 1/4 or 3/8 piece of plastic (included with the carbides) cured everything.

100% right on. spend a hundred on the skegs and the skis are fixed with some quick shimming on any yamaha sled. don't spend hundreds on new skis, not worth in my opinion
