New ORV license Fee for 2014

So I thought I would explain this New ORV license again because I finely get it

All OVR's need to purchase a $26.25 ORV License (a trail pass sticker just like previous years) This license is required to operate anywhere off of private lands.

In addition to the ORV License, an ORV "Trail Permit" (another sticker) for an additional $10 will be required when operating on State-designated ORV trails, routes and scramble areas.

So most people ORVing up here will need 2 stickers on their units

It is really up to the ORV rider to understand and know where they are riding to make sure they have the right pass

If you want to trail ride in the yoop you will need both stickers since most trails incorporate road travel or right of ways. $36.25
Hopefully all the monies($10 sticker) goes into the designated trail systems, this should improve and expand UP summer trail riding.
$20.00 increase sucks but it will improve trails:) I know there has been talks of DNR wanting and willing to create large ORV scramble and play areas for the UP.

I'm going to buy one for the Jeep type rig any way because it's not worth the hassle. Is it required? While sledding ,I have noticed a lot of pictures of Jeeps on the orv signs this year. :) :) :) . No, the pictures I saw didn't have a red line going through them.lol

Good question, i think as long as your jeep is licensed your good for all county and forest roads, if you take a designated trail (bill nichols, etc.) then you will need $10 sticker, if jeep is not licensed then buy both stickers and you are legal.

Wison: I imagine in a couple years they will rethink the 2 stickers and bring it back to 1.

That's what's nice about going in the woods with a registered vehicle with a orv sticker. In my case, an enduro or Jeep. You are legal just about anywhere. I think the DNR are confused when you have both. I should also buy a horse, then I would have all the bases covered.

Street licensed only needs the ORV Stickers (need both) if:

On Designated ORV Trail (Trail is for vehicles under 50" in width).
or
On Designated ORV Use Area (Silver Lake, St Helens Motorsports Area, etc.).
or
On portions of the Drummond Island ORV Route.

Any other ORV Route, including Bill Nichols ORV Route, is open to street licensed vehicles and does not require an ORV sticker.

That said, don't be afraid to buy the stickers, the program needs the money.

So, does this mean the trail North of the bridge to Copper Harbor is NOT required for use of the "State" trail permit? To the best of my knowledge, that trail is not a "State" trail, at least not yet.

Now can atv/utv/orv use forest roads now or are they still off limits

In the UP, on State land, they can with an ORV Sticker.
In the LP, no, unless it's also a Designated ORV Route.

On National Forest Land, it must be on the MVUM* as open to the specific vehicle class. Generally that means "no" in the LP and "yes" in the UP; though there are quite a few USFS Roads in the UP that are not open to ORVs.

On National Forest Land, in the Ottawa National Forest (western UP), they are generally closed from March 14 to May 16.

*Motor Vehicle Use Map, each forest has one on their web site or at the ranger office.

Sounds like a money grab just like the increase in hunting licenses, increase in hunting licenses to create an additional $18M then stripped another $19M in general funds out of the DNR budget.

For this to make sense the ORV license should be $10 and the trail permit $26, more and more roads are being open many of the ORV permits are being purchased to make golf carts legal to drive around the lakes, these are the people getting screwed.

Who doesn't like getting screwed! Just kidding I see where your coming from. My personal opinion is that $26 is still worth being legal to drive cart around lake. I just hope they don't get out of control with the fees, but who we kidding.
