Have you ever been to a site after they are done logging an area? They destroy more plants and trees than any two thousand snowmobiles could do.

But it is THEIR land. If they choose to harvest it then they are welcome to do it. It ISN'T YOUR land to decide if its ok to tear it up.

Also they are careful when logging on hills and around streams because of possible erosion and sediment deposition which is a big no-no for their third party certification (FSC, TFA, SFI, etc). When those third party auditors come out and see some damage from a sled the landowner is held liable (possible certification revoked, certification demerits, etc) for the damage that somebody else created. If their certification gets bumped down or revoked that means their timber is worth less money on the market so it in term hits them right in their wallet.

I don't think [hope and pray!] that anyone on this site is stupid enough to do the kind of damage being talked about so it's kind of like preaching to the choir. I would have to agree that w/the lack of snow in other locals you have a mass concentration of morons in the UP. The question is how to control/stop it. IMO we need to police ourselves or we will lose the priviledge to ride off-trail. Not an easy task but one that must be done before it's too late.

it's not about stupid, it sounds like the damage that occurred was when someone trenched in and roosted out soil and whatever else the track contacted, something every off trail sledder does, some more than others including myself. Just so happens this time it was in an area where it was obvious to a landowner and they're ticked, rightfully so. It would bad if offtrail closed down, on the other hand I would be moving west so,,hmmmm,,,,,tear it up boys!

Seriously, this goes right in hand with going through yards, snow banks on roads, fields over by Krupps,,,you now that I mean. At least get out to nowhere land where the whole world cant see you.

I'm a little off track to start, but you'll get my point at the end...Mi-Trale has been searching for land to make a scramble area for OHV riders. The DNR (I'm pretty sure I'm correct with my statement) has funding to by land and create this area we just have to find a spot. We/Mi-Trale would like to build the deepest mud pit, the hardest hill to climb, so when people can't make it up the hill or through the mud pit they would make it a point to come back to the area to try it again and this would also bring their money back to the area businesses. Maybe we could combined this area and make it a winter playground. I think I will bring this idea up at the next meeting, combining the 2 sports could be a huge selling point for having this in this area and I think the DNR would like the idea

Sounds like a great idea!! It will be a struggle to get something like this developed. DNR engineers will probably engineer all the fun right out of it!?? But a big play area (if allowed to be truly challenging) would be a big attraction. Those riders who have enough respect to stay off private property would love to have a place which is clearly marked for "off-trail fun"!!

95 percent of the problems would go away if people would first get premission and know where they are riding and second just keep THEIR BIG YAPPER SHUT about what kind of riding they do and where they do it. And for god sakes please stop posting videos and and pictures on the internet of your backwoods adventures. And stop useing the term "trees are for traction". These things piss land owners off when they see and hear them. And other than people running over new plantings i would love to see a pic where a sled in the winter has caused any noticible damage in the woods. I ride a 800 summit 146 with a 2 1/4 inch paddle on the trail only! (are you catching my drift?)

This is the same reason you dont ever tell people how many fish you caught or where you caught them!

An off-trail park sounds like a great idea in theory but it wouldn't be any fun after one weekend without fresh snow. Also, something engineered by DNR would most likely take the fun out of the hill. Part of the fun of finding climbs in the woods is the thrill of the unknown. There are plenty of areas to ride that don't have little saplings, have nicely spaced trees, and nice technical hills. I don't think anyone likes running over trees but it does happen on occasion.

Please keep in mind there are two different types of off-trail riders. The first group and would be the ones who like to follow all of the logging roads and two tracks to see where they go. They don't venture off of these logging/fire roads. The second type would be the ones who are looking for technical terrain with hills, ravines, and places people never go. There is nothing wrong with either group as long as they know where they're riding, go where they're supposed to, and respect the land.

There is a lot of state land out there for everyone to enjoy. If people don't respect it the riding we call off-trail won't exist in a lot of places within the next 10 years.

Next will be the state and Federal land if we don't band together and fight for it! Join SAWS and BRC now and support them. We need to fight to keep our lands open!!

It's not your land. It is belongs to EVERYONE. And as a collective whole, we are entitled to that land being used in a responsible manner, not trashing it. I have refused to join SAWS, BRC etc due to their unlimited support of ATV/UTV/OHV use. Sorry, but these machines trash the land which is unacceptable to me. Wilderness and forests are supposed to be exactly that. Not torn up playfields. I have fought to convince snowmobile clubs to keep trails from being turned over to ATV's in the summer. Thankfully more clubs in MN are realizing what a bad idea that is and actually trying to prevent ATV use on their trails in the summer.

btw, I am an ATV owner too.

Let me see if I understand what you are saying.

Get permission to use the land from the land owner first. If you choose not to get permission, feel free to tear it up and destroy anything you want then just make sure not to talk about it or take any videos of it and tell everyone that your Summit is for trailriding only.

Is that what you are saying???
