Oil usage too low?

'99 SKS 700, with the 39mm ACCS carbs. Not sure it matters what brand, but using AmsOil Interceptor, and put on 185 miles+ to a quart. I say + because I thought it would take a whole quart but just quite didn't and ran it over just a tad. Does this seem low? My '99 XC 500 uses almost double that, and I always thought that was too much, but just never adjusted it.

Thoughts?

WAY low to me unless you get super gas milage. In my AC F6 I get about 140 before the res light comes on,. My XRS 150 per 2 quarts. In my POO about the same as the XRS. BE Careful, especially on cold days.

good gas mileage? on that sled? hahahahaha

I get somewhere between 75-100 miles per quart on my 99 xc 700 (same motor). xcr440, you receive the windy yet? or did fedex lie?

That seems like a lot of miles for a quart of oil. I would say the sled would score the pistons and not live very long if you were starving it for oil though.

well how many gal of gas did you use?if you know that the math is ez go fill it up and then fill oil and do the math

I didn't actually calculate out the mileage, but if I had to guess based on the gas I put in I'd say around 9-10 MPG. That would put me at about a 74-82:1 ratio for gas to oil. I'm not sure what it should be, my guess is closer to 40 or 50:1 but we used to mix all our AmsOil premix sleds to right about 100:1 back in the day.

I'm going for a ride tomorrow, and I'll see just what I get for MPG's from a full tank to get an accurate number.

Indy, I won't be home until tomorrow, I'll let you know.

dump oil in the tank before going out just to be safe.fill sled with gas and oil then go ride and refill both to know exactly what you are using and post back

Really? I bought the sled with 2100 miles, and I've put on just short of 400 this year already. Wouldn't I have had a problem by now if it was starving for oil? I mean, if a piston or bearing isn't getting enough lubrication, its not going to last that long.

I know what your saying about being safe, just in case something just happened.

You probably would have had a problem by now. That's why we're asking next time you ride to do a true calculation to make sure you didn't make a mistake. If your using a quart of oil every 185 miles, your oil pump needs to be adjusted. With the sled NOT running and whatnot, open the hood and watch the oil pump. Hit the throttle and determine when the lever on the oil pump moves. Mine moves the second I slowly push in the throttle (which it should). Your oil pump could even be going downhill (i hope not) My dad's buddy who had a 99 xc 700 (same as mine) had a oil pump fail on his. Guy who had my sled said he had to replace the oil pump on mine (do not know why, he didn't tell us until we had the sleds loaded up on our trailer)

I have an XC700 here that is know as "Boomerang". You take that thing for "spin" any day all day and it always comes back in one piece. It has about 9,000 miles on it now, all original, never been apart (the motor anyway).

That machine gets about the same oil & gas ratio your talking about. I worried about that also and checked the oil pump to make sure it was adjusted right about 8,900 miles ago. I don't worry about it much anymore.

The wifes "Super Sport" uses twice as much oil and is know as "Chernobyl". I hate that thing.

Sweet Mike! How are you? Did you find my motor yet?

I have a shock that my Dad will be dropping off there, hopefully tomorrow if HE get's it out. You know, that retired self described grease monkey thing that just can't let go of the shop and things to work on (The beneficiary is ME, you know my Dad). It's off my '99 XC500, the rear Fox shock is dead.

I picked up this sled this fall and like you say, it sure seems to run well and has plenty of power as long as you keep gas in it...... It's good to know I'm not the only one with this experience. Put on about 80 miles south of Lakeville this morning, and it barely used a half a quart. I didn't top it off to see how much gas I used, but the guage says about 1/4 not sure how accurate that is to the 11.8 the tank holds. The thing ran like a top, just begged for more, but I had to get to Point for work. I'll give you a call tomorrow......
