Old Radar Base in the Keweenaw.

I was reading about the cell tower in the Keweenaw and brought back a place we went to up there years ago. First time was in 1979-1980.
How many remember the old radar base up there??
We use to stop up there on our way from Mohawk (stayed at the motel there) to Copper Harbor. Back then, you could get in and have a few drinks and something to eat.

I have never been up there:rolleyes: it is not legal .
I was under the impression they put cams up there some time back and if u were to visit it would be wise to put masking tape over your numbers .
I have not been in at least 5 yrs.
If I was the state of MI or a local club I would be pushing hard to gsa to sign it over . the gsa has been dumping these types of sites for some time now for pretty cheep . if targeted letter campaign went out to gsa before it hit the auction block I guarantee it could be had for a song

Last time I was up there would have been in the early 80's. It was still open for food and drinks. Then we went up 2 or 3 years later and it was closed.

More about the "Old Radar Base"

FWIW, (click →) Pasty.NET Internet service in the Copper Country employs Wireless DSL (DSL = Direct Stationary Link), which includes a major relay located at the "Old Radar Base" on Mt. Horace Greeley which passes their broadband signal from Calumet to Gratiot Lake, Gay, Lac Labelle, Brockway Mountain and all the points served from there (Copper Harbor to Eagle River). See more (click →) here.

I havent been up there for a few years but last i heard the property was bought by some kind of youth camp?
The "Keweenaw Academy", an educational facility for troubled youth, was closed over a decade ago.

The
last I heard, the property belongs to Keweenaw County. It is "off limits", and yes indeedy (click →) the Keweenaw County Sheriff has a remotely controlled camera on the building where the radar dome was located. That camera can pan and tilt to get a view of most of the buildings on the property.

And incidentally, Pasty.net provides a number of (click →) Wi-Fi access points around the Keweenaw as well.

If you're really into it, you can find much more about the Calumet AFS a.k.a. the "Old Radar Base" (click →) here. There's much info from the Air Defense Radar museum; scroll down to see the note:
"By Scott, Illinois on Saturday, May 28, 2005 - 06:55 pm:"
… but it's a bit tricky to get to, see also my note:
"By FRNash/PHX, AZ on Saturday, May 28, 2005 - 10:13 pm:"
for all the gory details.

This base was an Air Force Radar Base. To the best of my knowledge, no connection to Extremely Low Frequency communication which was a Navy system. As Nash stated, it is owned by Keweenaw County & is off limits of which unfortunately, that is due to the vandalism done over the years which is too bad, it use to be a cool place to visit.-Mezz

Mezz, I agree. We use to make that a "must stop" as the people were happy to see us and the money we spent at their club.

I remeber a few years back being in the Hayward area was a big fenced in area of green buildings. Did not look like anyone was there but everything was plowed and kept nice.

hey...is there an ECHO in here? I thought I posted that a couple o posts ago...LOL

on a side note for those up to speed here's a ....TIDBIT....harvest1121 this might help with that question

The NuMI tunnels slant downward because the neutrino beam is aimed at the Soudan Mine in northern Minnesota, where the MINOS Far Detector is located. The neutrinos follow a line through the sphere of the earth, passing under Wisconsin and a bit of Lake Superior.
The NuMI tunnels took 2 years to excavate and 1 year to outfit. Most of the length of the tunnels were dug by a 22ft diameter tunnel boring machine.
