People in a Caddy on the trail

Thursday evening 5 of us were riding through the Elcho swamp inbetween Pelican Lake and Summit Lake. We come over a small hill, and see headlights in front of us. CAR HEADLIGHTS. They were obviously stuck. It was a front wheel drive 4 door Cadillac. Man and woman of at least 60. There was a 4x4 dodge truck behind them. They called their buddy.

Anyway to make a long story short, people in Caddy were from Chicago(go figure), the were following the GPS to their friends house. The road dead ended, but the snowmobile trail kept going. The GPS told them to keep going too. This wasnt a fire lane road trail. Its tight twisty and narrow. But hey, the GPS dont lie. They were about 2 miles from the end of the road where we found them.

So we spent the next 1.5 hours or so getting them out. I am actually surprised we got them out. I havent a clue how they made it that far, but on the way back out we had to get them unstuck at least 5 times.

But hey all was not lost, they gave us enough money to get us all good and drunk once we parked the sleds.

So watch out for cars on the trail around blind corners....

I and my father ran into a similar situation about 15 years ago. A car took a turn on a packed fire lane off of a plowed one. They made it about 75 yards. We pulled them out with one of the sleds. Good thing we had a rope that could stretch a much as it did. They were very happy.

There were two trucks on Nebish Road (snowmobile trail during the winter) in Vilas County Saturday (1-2). They had no clue where they were.

Another case of people trusting the all mighty GPS, and not common sense. LOL. Glad you were able to help them get out of that situation.

Cars and Trails...

A couple of weeks ago I was grooming in a road ditch when a car drove into the ditch behind me and onto the fresh trail. Of course the trail hadn't set yet so his car sank like a rock. After pulling him out he explained that he thought I was a snow plow because the trail was so flat and smooth. I guess I should take that as a compliment.....

Seeing I grew up in Lake Linden and now only live a couple miles away I agree, I have seen a taxi on the trail...I think that's weird but then it's LL...Anyway, when I was like 18 or so a lady trying to get to my parents gift shop drove over a small section of trail with her car...She stuck it good. She said she would take care of me if I got her out..I got her out after an hour or so and she gave me a "Snickers bar"...

Now I never expect anything but a thank you...

A number of years ago when we still lived in the twin cities, my wife and I were in northern Wisconsin staying at her brothers cabin. We decided to go out to this small tavern for a couple cold ones. This was one of the establishments that we had heard about but had never been there. We headed out in our 4-wheel drive jeep and it was snowing pretty hard. There were a number of twisting back country roads to get there but we managed to reach our destination.

After a bit we decided to head back, my wife and I walked outside to the jeep realizing how hard it was snowing and how much additional accumalation we already had. We jumped in the jeep and at that point I wasn't sure what was driveway and what was other trailways. We did know the driveway was quite long out to the main road so I just took off down the road.

It was when I reached the itty bitty stop sign that I realized I was on a snowmobile trail. My wife and I looked at each other dumbfounded and we both said "oops". I did come to a complete stop (that's the law), looked both ways and turned on the actual road.

We still laugh about it today.

UPS Truck

On Thursday afternoon, I watched a UPS truck pull onto the trail (a marked logging road with an "Opened" gate) just north of St Germain. Imagine his surprise when the wide road ended in a logging area, with a huge pile of brush and just enough space to turn around.....

Saturday there was a guy driving a ford truck down the Miss-Kal trail near Manton Michigan. chatting away on his cell phone and seemed oblivious to all the sleds. kinda makes me wonder if he was using GPS or not...............
