I went flying by the house to fast on this one.So dad returned it the next weelend for a tank with a 20" track that would run 45 mph @ best. Then in 73 highbinder and I went out and bought our own 73 Polaris SS Colt 340's.We stayed with Polaris for 35 yrs. but had to make brand change in 2007.
In 1999 took delivery of a 2 year old xlt triple 600 with the extra-12. I stole it for $2,700 with 1,300 miles on it, dollys, helmet, and 2 gallons of oil!!!! This was a nice sled and I buried my buddys 600 cat twin the first time out on Houghton Lake.
I don't have a picture. It was an old Evinrude, just a big old tank. That thing wouldn't go 15 mph down hill with a tail-wind. I guess that was perfect for a kid to learn on.
just went back to garage and took these, my son who is now 16 and i just dug it out, been sitting since 99, i bought it new in aug. of 1977 it is a 1978 exciter. needs new fuel lines and oil lines which we are working on. we had it running, we cleaned the carb and she fired right up!
My first sled was a 1980 TrailCat 340 that was handed down to me from my grandpa when I turned 8. He'd had it since it was new and I started riding it on his lap at age 4 months. Being the eldest grand son had its perks, my older sister and female cousins were pissed when I got the sled we all learned to ride on! It was cool to have the exact sled that taught me to love this sport, it's now resting in my parents woods with no track, a blown engine and a tree growing through one of the ski loops. My mom is always trying to get me to bring it to a junkyard because "it's ugly and broken" but my dad and I have decided it'll never move from that spot!
I still remember how cool that ride with my dad was after my grampa informed me that I was old enough for my own sled and we had to make the 4 1/2 hour trip to Silver Bay MN to get that sled. My dad drove that whole way and right back with the sled because I was so excited, even though he won't even get on a snowmobile because "they stink". Such great memories! RIP Grampa Al and thanks for my favorite sport!
1979 El Tigre 5000 the picture is no tmy sled, but looked just like it! Good times! My first trip "up north" was with this sled, January of 1990 maybe? Riding between Presque Isle and Boulder Junction, the trails were so bumpy my hood hinge broke and the hood fell off! LOL.
My first sled was a 1972 Roll-A-Flex Commanche. Here is an old 1973 advertisment. Was my Grandpa's sled and he gave it to me when I was 10. Good times!
This is a picture like what was my first snowmobile I could call my own. The only picture I could find close was on vintagesleds.com posted by screen name Pull Start.
We had a 1972 Scorpion Stinger II 340 family machine that we all used.
After the big blizzard of 1973 I was determined I would have my own sled, and no sharing with the sister, and brother. That is when I bought a 1974 Herters. I can't remember the price, but I know I owed the dad bank of loan and trust for about 3 years.
Couldnt get picture to work, but found this. These were just like the
first sled I bought on my own. I was 14 or 15 years old. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ZIHRvBHCkc
1972 Ski doo Tnt silver bullet when I was 8. Dad gave me a windex bottle full off gas when i rode and told me to spray it in the carbs when ever I stopped and was just idling. Lol just like polarisrider said, round and round in a couple acre feild. I have rode alot of miles but those will be the times i never forget.
It took me a while to find a picture of a 1966 Viking which was my first sled as I lost all of my pictures in a flood in 1997. This one belongs to a friend of mine
1983 Yamaha Bravo that my Dad got new in 1983. My brother and I crashed it, rolled it, jumped it, and generally beat the heck out of it. He sold it in the 90's only to find it (the same one he sold per the vin) again for sale in 2008. He bought it and started fixing it up for my son to ride. His first year will be this year on it. This is him after seeing it for the first time last spring.
