Polaris Acquires yet another company....

Coming from someone who goes to school in Minnesota, I will say that the labor problem is a pretty large problem up there. First off, polaris means the most northern star, and for a long time they were the furthest north manufacturing plant. I think there is maybe one company that has ousted them now, but still they are up there. I would love to work for them, but I am stuck in a tough place. The company gives unbelievable pay and benefits to those who work, but its just the location. I would love to live in a small town, and live north of Minneapolis once I graduate, but after talking to buddies who have worked up in Rosseau, I just dont think I could do it. Obviously they need the remote space for their R&D stuff, but I think they are going to run into problems with people to work if the company continues to grow and demand at the rate it is at now. Sorry for hijacked thread lol.

I don't know if they have a labor problem or not, but if they do "give unbelievable pay and benefits to those who work" they will not have a labor shortage. Supply and Demand from Econ 101. I don't know Rosseau

If they do have a labor shortage, it's either they don't pay enough for the work they need done OR something else is throwing off the equilibrium such as government interference in the form of welfare, as was claimed in earlier posts.

It's a good sized and quickly growing company but it's not an enormous company - they should not have difficulty finding workers who want to work in a growing recreational business like this unless they don't want to compensate them.

not so sure about unbelievable pay and bennys. I know people who work for them in the metro and they are making no more than others in the same fields.if u are high enough on the ladder the toy perks are real nice but u have to be pretty high up for the pick 3 demos a yr deal .

Big difference between Poo, that started out as a snowmobile only company, and Yamaha. Bad comparison. I think most people would be surprised like I was.

Maybe if Yamaha invested more in their sleds they may sell a few more. But why would they want to do that? ;) I would think a shareholder would want to see progress and more sales and profit. Otherwise, why bother?

Poo hasn't been a sled company for more then a.decade. but whatever you say.....

I was not surprised with poo numbers. who buys sleds south of Wisconsin? who buys atv and bikes .
Yamaha gave up just not worth it for the tiny microcosm of the economy snowmobiling is .then add the dwindling trails and land available for use. they don't need a crystal ball to see whats up.
they prob make way more on pianos than sleds. and prob a much higher margin per unit.
at this point the molds stamps and castings are paid for . so as long as guys are willing to buy old tec they will keep building them why not.I think as soon as that stops they will be done with sleds. but like I said it is all paid for if they can dump 1000 a yr they will build em. look at the supper jet.

Pianos? Doubtful but.who knows?

Polaris is not a small company anymore. As of last year they were number 674 on the Forbes 1000. They are bigger than BRP and Arctic Cat. Yamaha is larger and I think they sell a lot more pianos than sleds. Like I said in a previous post there is a real labor shortage in the area. I looked and the population of Roseau county is 15520 and in a previous post it said that they employ 1700 people, Marvin Windows about 20 miles down the road employ about 2600 people, 25 miles the other direction you have Central Boiler with about 250 employees, keep going another 40 miles and you have Arctic Cat with 1400 more and Digi Key with over 3100 employees. This is Pennington county which has a population of about 14200 people. There are other employers in the area also. Another twist has been the oil jobs about 6 hours away that paid 6 figure wages.

This is pretty much spot on. It really is not a populated area and the draw is big. As i said about the benefits I know a few people working there after graduating this year and $+60K a year plus a free sled and some other perks and i dunno how much better benefits you can get as a newly grad. Not to mention you can rent out toys every weekend if you choose. For someone who enjoys the outdoors and powersports as much as I do, there would be no complaining from me there.
