Preventing mice in the garage

The key is to plug all holes to prevent entry. I had three living in my boat house, that was with bounce sheets all over the exterior and a plug in ultrasonic pest deterrent. I finally went old school and caught them with traps, no sign of them for three weeks now. If you have siding you need to plug the holes in the bottom of the corner joints, they can get in there!
I have also used moth balls and that did not work either, not even close actually! Poison inside only attracts them, they may die but they can cause damage before doing so.

Get a cat and let it live outside. You just need to give it a place to sleep and some food and it will hang around your house and it will hunt mice, moles, and anything else that might wander into your yard. When we moved into our house 4 years ago someone dumped a kitten in our yard. She is great hunter, she gets food and water from us twice a week in the summer and every other day during the winter. She has her patrol area that she does everyday and she always comes back to eat when we feed her. She came to use fixed, so no kittens to deal with. She beats the crap out of other cats that come into the yard. The only thing I have seen her back down from was a raccoon that was 3 times her size. I have never had a problem with mice in the garage or the house and I live in the country. I also never had them in my camper that is outside year round. If you live in the country than this is a good idea if you live in the city not so great of an idea for obvious reasons.

Some cats are great for that. Some are not.
We have one that is awesome at cleaning up the rodents around the place. We have a steady stream of dead mice, voles and rabbits being dropped at the door. Not sure why he thinks we want them at the door.
Last Fall, we had a chipmunk in the garage. I could not get that thing to leave. I tried trapping him, no luck. I tried to scare him out, no luck. Finally listened to the smarter half, she says let the cat out there and catch the dang thing. I checked on the cat about 20 minutes later and a chipmunk was laying at the door.
The other cat could have spent a week out there and we would still have a chipmunk in the garage.

I have 5 cats in the barn, 2 sticky traps on the tunnels, and a package of decon. went out last weekend to start my sled and a mouse jumped out of it. The only good thing is I think the clutch got his back leg because as he was fleeing from me I saw a blood trail. Hopefully he learned his lesson. I don't think there is anything that really can be done about mice.
I use the D-Con pellets. You just open the box and set it where they run like along a wall.I put mine in the corners and under the freezer. They eat the pellets and then need to drink. They die outside.P.S. DO NOT LET YOUR PETS EAT THE PELLETS. I set out three boxes and in the spring the pellets are eaten but no mice.

I have had success with moth balls both inside and outside of the building. I think the mice hate those things.

Mice and chipmunks can do incredible damage in a short period of time to a car engine compartment, and snowmobile, boat or ATV. THIS is the time of year they are looking for a place to spend the winter. They bring nuts, and leaves and anything else right with them...and of course once they find a nice warm dry place, they invite all their cousins along too.
A good cat is well worth some food every so often for sure, but in the absence of that, I have found the decon spread around the outside of the buildings is far better than spreading it around inside the building. Get them to eat it before they find a way in...cause once they are in, they will pack the poison food away right in what you want them to stay out of...sort of the opposite of what you are trying to do....but they do what comes naturally and they store for the long winter.
Inside the garage, I put traps around and bait it with peanut butter or bacon...so if any do get past the poison barrier, then they will likely get into the traps.
Don't use poison with cats tho, or you will probably kill the cat right along with the mice.
The best defense is an offense....unless you are the Detroit lions, then you just sort of lay down and play dead....cause you don't get hurt them....

Victor mouse trap with a little peanut butter on it and Snap! and theyre done. They out smarted the cat a few times going in tight places but there they cant resist peanut butter.
srx700 do not have to much faith in moth balls.it is a myth I have seen pick,s on this site of a mouse nest made in a mouth ball box.bounce is also BS the mice made a nest with chewed up chunks of bounce in my throttle body's a few years back that cost me close to a grand.ever try picking baby mouse carcases out of your reeds?that sled also had the balls in the pan.I now have a fiber optic cam the ridged see snake got at home depot.I can stick it any place including down the air box through the throttle body and look at my reeds.look under motor in y pipe look at inside of jugs.and I was able to right it off because I can use it for work win win
My neighbor just had a exterminator set his house up to prevent mice. What they have is containers that you actually put in the ground around the house. They have lock tops with openings for mice to get it but pets cannot. The idea is to keep them outside. He had a pretty big problem but I think this is working. I believe that you can purchase these types of set up's but I have not tried. For me i use snap traps with peanut butter. The traps do the job. Had them in my travel trailer and my approach there is to keep them out by sealing it up. They like to use the gas pipe on the bottom to sit and chew a larger hole around the pipes that go through the floor. I new trick that I started this year is that I greased the pipes with axle grease. They do not like trying to crawl through that when they run along the pipe. They also do appear to like chewing through grease to get at the hole they want to make bigger. Will see how this does this fall. They are tricky but diligence is your best offense. Check often during this time of year. Keeping them from picking your place as the Rodent Hilton is the first challenge. Make them think there are better alternatives.

if you wanna have some serious fun at the same time. Get a few buckets and a buddy. Both of you sit out there on your buckets and you'll need riffle BB guns. Sit out there in the mid evening and they'll start to become active. Set up a few bait piles of peanut butter and cheeses. Have clear lines to those food piles. For mice, the pile is what fits in the palm of your hand. You'll be amazed at how they travel around the perimeter of the garage. Have the gun loaded and cocked and on your shoulder and when you site one in do it quickly because they are nervous little creatures. They basically don't stop to much till they find the food. For a real challenge, don't use food and that there is a good time. I've killed many mice with BB guns and the satisfaction is over the top. Just wear safety glasses cause BBS bounce around. May need to consider a blanket draped over a window, but really, it is a blast. Me and a buddy had a contest once and I whipped him 3 to 1. A gut shot is pretty much a kill on mice as they are rather delicate

I would make sure your building is secure from the outside and look for any possible entry points for them and seal them up. My polebarn up north is pretty secure but we have the doors open all the time while were there so until the weather is cold and snowy and the doors then stay shut mice can get in. At that point I will set 4 or 5 traps and within a few days I will have them all. Although now I may have found a new sport!

Lenny...you go for a heart shot, or just shoot them in the butt?? What if they are running away from you...up the bunghole, or wait for another day??

THE WHEEL OF DEATH.It starts with a 5 gallon bucket,put about 3-4" of antifreeze in the bottom.Then get a beer can,coffee can and put a 1/4 dowell thru the can so it can spin freely on the dowel then put the dowel thru the top of the bucket with the can in the middle,cover the can with peanut butter and put a ramp up the side of the bucket.The mouse runs up the ramp jumps on the can,the can spins and the mouse falls in the bucket.
