Question on trail pass backer

OK, before folks go ape crazy, let me clarify. I am a single guy with my family grown up and gone (except occasional weekend visits) I have 12 sled, 3 antique, 1 kids, the rest from 01-17..all WI registered, all WI trail permits (except antiques) the four newest sleds all get MI trail passes... I am a member of a WI club and financially donate to two others and have a son who is a volunteer groomer driver in the UP.....I invest FOUR figures of cash every year before a flake flies..... I am not CHEAP or trying to SCREW the man.....I ride 95% of my time in WI.

If I wake up one morning and get a bug up my azz to ride one of the older sleds from St. Germain to lake Gogebic for a burger and back while having four sleds sitting in the garage with MI trail permits, why cant one sled have a sticker on a backer that I could use to temporarily put on the older sled for the day trip??? WI and MI and the clubs I support make $$$$$ on me....

THANK YOU !!!!!!!!!!

Pretty sad you need to show proof your a responsible sledder on here to satisfy the preachy crowd....
To me your stance makes alot of sense. I don't have all the sleds you do but will switch between 2 sleds depending on that days type of riding.

Maybe we should keep track of the persons complaining and those complaining about those complaining. See which is more?

Okay shelby369. I understand you now, and it appears you are fully responsible person indeed. It doesn't appear that you are"cheap" or anything such as that. I will say I'm sorry for my thoughts. Also, I'm one that understands that we have to support our sport for it to survive, and maintain. No one else will do it for us. I do believe though that your intent may not be "legally attached" as to the law in Mi???? Many other states also. You surely can understand the thought process to this by the law. They have questions of the intent to this. Also there are some folks around that would like to easily relieve you of your trail permit. We hear more of this every year it seems.

seems to me the only controversy should be who has the best product the OP was asking for info about....but what fun is that?

BTW, JD..... does an alarm go off in your office when I post?....LOL....good edit....LOL

not bustin balls here, but I believe they say to affix the sticker to your windshield, which is dumb with all the shields that get broken each year....what to do then?....just tough luck?....buy another $50 permit??
I've tried to heat and remove from broken shield with no luck.

I know what your saying snowbuilder. You stated it correctly as "affix to", and the many broken windshields. I have heard you can obtain a replacement. Probably more $$$$$$$$$$$$$. Canada really strict on this issue. In the past so was Wisconsin.

Here is my reply to you Shelby369, since you sort of asked for one.

First, it is great to see someone so passionate about the activity and I commend you for your support in so many ways. While I cannot speak for everyone on this board or all involved, I believe it would be pretty safe to say that no one would have a problem with someone like you moving it from a regular rider to one you just want to spin the track for the weekend. The problem arises with the folks who will not be so honorable. Those that will "borrow" a permit from their buddy or move from sled to sled through the season. I believe quite a bit of this would happen if you did not have to stick the sticker to your sled. Just look at the ways so many folks want to cheat the systems in place already.

It's sad, but true. Because of the knuckleheads, the innocent ones are sometimes penalized. I guess another thought that at least I have is that while it may be a pain in the butt that you have to get a sticker for all the sleds you want to ride, even for just a brief moment...in the grand scheme of things, it should not be a major financial liability for you. Someone that has the means to own so many machines should be able to fork over the $48 (in MI) for a trail permit. Also, MI does have permits for vintage sleds. I am not sure of what the age cutoff for vintage is, but you might be surprised! They are way cheaper and are good forever once purchased.

Lastly, this is another great argument point for 3 day passes to be sold too.

Actually it says to attach directly above or below headlight. So not necessarily the windshield. I affix mine to the hood. I also tend to go through windshields. Since I like a mid height one, and even though I mean to usually don't switch to low when planning on off trail, backcountry riding. Hence another reason to affix to hood panel

Copy and pasted from Mi. DNR website
Display of trail permit sticker
The trail permit sticker needs to be permanently affixed to the forward half of the snowmobile directly above or below the headlight.

It can be placed on the cowl below the windshield in WI, also.

I wonder if you could bring your broken windsheild in to a permit retailer and get a duplicate for a minimal charge? You can get duplicate registration stickers here in MN for like $1.50

UPDATE
I didn't get details on cost, but I called MI DNR. If you send in documentation, Explanation of how permit got destroyed. Pictures, and peel off remaining sticker and send it in. They will issue a duplicate.

shelby369, that word "permanently" is what I was trying to relate to for you. And I understand the 3 day "out of state" trail permit reasoning, but I have questions to do any "States" do this? How would the 3 day permit be priced so as to maintain the much needed revenues? Do you think this would increase the "out of state" riders? Would not Wisconsin need to do this also to prevent MI. from being shorted revenue from what they are getting now? IDK? Many aspects to this issue to getting it to workout. Ontario, Ca no longer issues a 7, or 3 day trail permit, but offer a by the day permit, with a 2 day minimum purchase. This works out to more cost per day than the 3, and 7 day permits used to cost.

I put mine on the HOOD near the headlight for years and years now....and the DNR....can scan your sticker with a bar reader....Indiana has a bar code....and up popped that number belongs to a 1981 340....only I was on a 2004 700 EFI....ticket....and the states that don't have a bar code....guess what....they scan it with the hand held bar reader anyways and that number comes up a different sled....have 135 dolla ready is my advice....my other advice if you destroy a sticker....buy another one....let some moths fly free...nuff said
