Recommendation of place to stay with family

It is looking like our family snowmobile trip to the Black Hills is going to be cancelled because of low snow and warm temps. We have not stayed in the UP for many years now, and the last trip there was kind of a turn off due to all the trail racers. We had always stayed in the Western UP, but I have heard good things about the Eastern UP area around Newberry. Any thoughts on an area and a good family resort to stay at would be appreciated?

If you are in Prescott why not save your self the time in the vehicle and go to Maddens on gull lake? They have just as much snow as the UP right now.

If you are avoiding racers you are better off going to the North Shore of Minnesota. The trails don't have the straight stretches to get the high speeds. Grand Marais, Munising, Seney can be horrible if it is the weekend. I personally got pulled over on the rail trail between Raco and Sault St Marie by Michigan State Patrol who was driving beside me to gage my speed(yes I saw him). He put me at 106 mph. Asked why I was going so fast. My response everyone else is. Since I was wearing black he didn't realize he had just stopped a 40 year old woman.
There is no speed limit unless posted in Michigan and lots of people fly.

The Quality Inn in Newberry is a great place to stay with a great hot breakfast unless that has been affected by covid. They only have a hot tub no pool. I saw 30 people in there at once. Superior Shores by Two Harbors has beautiful cabins at decent rates with full kitchens.

Lakewoods east of Cable Wi north of Hayward would give you the pool, hot tub dining room and a huge access to the trail network. My father took us there when we were kids. This would be way closer to you and probably give you a better experience for your family. Lots of places to eat and get fuel. Lots of bars to warm up at if the kids get cold. They have no problems with you bringing in kids to warm them up and buy a hot coco.

If you think about Lakewood at all and want to stay in the main lodge where the pool is call now and check the dates. They book up like lightning. They also have a ton of condos(these would give you kitchens) and cabins, but they are not in the main lodge.

Following along here. We are heading somewhere on Sat the 22nd to ride Sunday - Wednesday. With canada closed off to our group at least, the norm for us would be to start on either the west or east side of UP (driving up from IN/IL border area). But with good snow elsewhere I was thinking maybe try something different, driving up to say Tomahawk and riding towards the Cable area. Not sure if you can make it around to MN from there? Rode out of Brainard one year and went North and East from there. It's been awhile but liked it, especially the further north we got.

Prefer not to sit in the truck more than we have to...if you wanted to ride the North Shore and were driving up from IL - where would you start? Or is that Cable area just as good? We typically ride longer days but not big on grades and straightaways.

If you wanted to ride the north shore and were driving up from IL I'd go as far as two Harbors. Couple of decent resorts and hotels right on the trail system. Another 40 minutes would get you to the Silver Bay area which would put you a little more central to the trails. If you were to come that far north PM me and I could give you a ton of great areas to get to or stay. We have a cabin near Silver Bay and ride there most weekends. There's no grades or long straightaways unless you get on some forest roads.

I'm for MN riding since I live here but if you wanted to minimize drive time I would hit up the Bayfield/Ashland area. They have been getting hit hard with LES (I think 12-18") the other day, and get minimal traffic. Too many people drive right past it on US 2 going to the pennisula.

If you base out of Lakewoods you can ride in four directions. Thousands of miles of trails. I have been going to that area for thirty years. Still find a new trail every year. Went to UP several times too. Too many people and crappy trails every time. If there is snow NW Wisconsin is hard to beat.

Good plans you have. Tomahawk would be a excellent starting point and head NW from there. Absolutely great riding when they have snow there! Perhaps chat with attakman on the area around Tomahawk as he knows it very well.

Good to hear. We parked in Tomahawk last year and headed to the UP. So was thinking about starting at the same place and heading NW instead. Tomahawk is an easy drive for us if we time the part going around chicago right (probably 6 hours from where our trailer is parked).

To all that posted about Lakewoods resort the misses and I are going to take a ride there Thursday and spend the night because of all the recommendations. Looks like a nice place will post my 2cents when we get back. Should be a good 140-180ish mile one way and will get to see a new area. Thanks for all the input.

I just got back from Hayward area. We stopped at Lakewoods on Friday. With so many different trail options, it spreads the traffic out. We didn't get to the area till noon on Friday. Rode till 10pm that night. I maybe counted 25 sleds throughout the day! I'm sure the extreme cold played into that. Just crazy though. In UP, you would probably see 30 sleds within 30 minutes! Saturday had more traffic, but still was very thin on numbers. The only bigger groups was due to us in AWSC, taking group rides.
Trails were good. Just some rocky areas. Most trails around there are twisties, and not much grades.
We stayed at Lakewoods resort 3 years ago in a condo. The condos were nice. I heard the rooms are a little outdated. Big bar. I like the booths that sit next to the bar.

When we stopped at Black Iron grill on Saturday, there was a 20 person family that were renting sleds from Hayward powersport. They were alternating riders. I talked to the guide. All of them were having a blast! They came up from Naperville. First time riders.

Put it this way, I rode out of Danbury on Saturday. Minus the few SxSs that we came across I would have told you we were riding in Vilas county if I didn't know better. Great trails, lots of stops, little traffic.

Wheeled SxS's on a groomed snowmobile trail SUCK! We do not go to areas, trails, that allow SxS's on the snowmobile trails. Tracked SxS's are fine as they don't rut out the trail.

Surprisingly they were not rutted out. It was more that they couldn't keep a straight line on the trail that made a few spots hairy. They were all going pretty slow.

Enjoy your trip. We have left Lakewoods going to Houghton on day one, then back to Lakewoods day 2. The northern route north of Clam Lake into Iron County will give you very little traffic. The southern route dropping south at Clam Lake to the Tuscobia into Price County, then to Lac Du Flambeau over to Land O Lakes north will give you a little more, but both are nice routes.

If you like blueberry pancakes they are really good.
