Remote Start

I am looking into getting a remote start installed and was wondering what others have and if you have had issues.

Thanks,
Nate

All I can say is, you get what you pay for. I put a $450.00 one in one of my Suburbans and never had a problem. It had an alarm as well though. Had Micky Shore put a $99.00 one in my wifes minivan and it worked for about nine months.

Get a good one and, most importantly, have it installed by a high end car audio and accessory store.

It will cost you more, but it will work.

This would be for a vehicle.

Looking at the Viper5301. Both places I looked at have a lifetime on the install so if things go bad due to wires not soldered right, etc..they cover it.
Parts, typical 1 yr deal. Price approximately $450+tax is what I am finding.

I have had a viper installed in my dodge pick-up now for 6 years . Haven't had any problems with the unit but the remote, the first couple years, was a bit touchy. When i would put the keys in my pocket, it would start the vehicle.

I have an older Viper 5900 two way which has been flawless... I don't need all the alarm features but the remote range was awesome... Make sure to read the manual on the unit before you buy and have them put all the options you want on... Extra features do cost more money so choose wisely...

Mine was a Viper as well. Don't remember the model but it had remote start, alarm and perimeter sensor.

I have a Viper(don't remember model) in my '03 F250 PSD with a timer on it so the glow plugs can cycle since about '04 and a '06 Escape with a Viper also in it since '06 and both have been flawless. When I get a new vehichle I will put the same in them again. I've put 2 in older cars we used to have and there not had to put in just time comsuming, I had both Vipers installed @ a car audio place and wouldn't install one myself again.

Stay way from the cheep models (Bulldog's - had one, it worked for awhile but then range got worse and worse) I replaced mine with an ultra start you can find them on ebay cheep but if you try to get them through a dealer $150 and up. I have never had the Viper ones but have heard great things about them too, also Audiovox I have heard is good.

I think this is the model I bought Ultra Start U1272-PRO I have gotten every bit of the 2,800 ft range out of mine. I did do the install on both of my systems myself it can be intimidating at first but its more of a pain in the butt job than hard. Getting to all the wires you need is the hardest part.

A couple of other things to think about is:
One way or Two way remotes - two way may seem like over kill but depending how you use yours it might be nice, if you can't see the truck from where you use it most.
(Original I bought the unit to have keyless entry, after I was married my truck went outside the remote starter, started getting used allot more but I could not see the truck from my bedroom, and when getting 3 kids ready in the morning running to check if it started became low priority.)
Make sure you get a unit with at least 1 button per function. (the Lock and Unlock need to be different buttons, other wise you are guessing what mode you are in, Bulldogs use 1 button)
Don't forget about security bypass modulus and make sure you get something that comes setup to work your door locks otherwise you might spend more on relays than the starter system.

Also save you instructions even if you have someone else install it. There are allot of programming things you can do. Make your lights flash, honk the horn when locking or unlocking. but if you ever change units to upgrade you will not need to rewire. Just compare the two units wiring diagrams and match up everything. I think I had my whole dash apart on the first unit I bought and it took me 6 or 7 hr to install. Cut that one out removed one dash panel and was done in 45min with the ultra start.

Lastly, dolph comment on "put the keys in my pocket, it would start the vehicle." Choose the remote carefully for this reason. I drive one of our fire chiefs truck when he is out of town and it has an older model of the ultra start remote that kinda looks like a GM key remote but swear if you look at that remote the wrong way it will start the truck up. Only time I have had a problem with mine, is if I bend over and lean against some just the right way. I will say my bulldog remote was ugly to look at but it had a key protector and the buttons where the rubber type that were recessed in the remote. I never had any problems with that one, but that could have been b/c the range sucked on it too.

I have a Viper alarm/remote start on my truck, too. It works flawlessly every time. As stated before, it is touchy, but I'm glad I don't have to struggle with it with gloves on. It has a great range, too. I can't always see my truck when I start it, but have yet for it to fail. I'm thankful for the Borla exhaust! It's always happy to sound off in the morning to let me know she's awake.

Thanks for all the replies. I decided to go with the Viper5301. It is a 2way deal with around 2000' range. It has LED's next to each button that tell you if the command work or not. I am sure I will like it and I know my kids and wife will, lol.

I bought a used truck that had an after market one in it. After being stranded dead a few times, I had the dealer completly remove the whole thing. Reset the door remotes, fix all the wires. Was a big mess.
I like the idea but would, like others have said, buy a real good one and have it professionaly installed. Just my two cents.

I've had the Avital 410 installed in my last 3 vehicles and have had no issues what so ever. The range is awesome and there are some base line features such as start delay (glow plugs), light flashing, horn, and other options. I'll never go without one again!

If your vehicle is newer, check with your dealer for an OEM system. For Ford cars they are less that $300 and interface with all of the vehicles systems.

When I ordered our new Ford Edge the dealer said flat out to NOT get the Ford auto start. He said they were inferior in every way to high end aftermarket starters.

I would agree with that. I have it on my Acadia also but it was a factory installed option that range is not as good, and the fact I can't do pit stops start.

Pit stop Start = when the Vehicle is running you hit the start button, (foot off the break, and car already in park) then turn the key off and take the key out. Vehicle will stay running for your standard set time.

However I will not take the time or money to change it out.

I talked with the dealer and there stuff just doesn't even compare with this stuff, not even close. They wanted $200 more, it's not bi-directional and the warranties only last 1 yr for the install where mine is lifetime. They still have to pull back some of the sheathing on wires and solder the wires together like everyone else. One of these days, they need to just make these things a plug and play just like when your wiring for trailer lights is prewired.

Ihave used and installed units made by Bulldog for a few years. Never had a problem with any of them except the cheap ones sold at the box stores. I order the Deluxe 500 model. It is a two way remote with delay start for diesel and safety features for manual trans. They have a great tech line if you have any problems with installations.

Viper is what I have used for years. My installer at the dealership loves em.
