I never were it cuz Polaris was giving them out that yr lol cool blue with the red and white racing stripes.
my buddy's dad has a closet full of them from every yr they ran it he was a flag man.
I remember going to see quit a few of those races as a kid.
any one remember the snowmobile oval track races at the the MN state fair grand stand?
those were great .I raced kitty cats then 292s then they quit racing at the grand stand.
ahhh the good old days . I also remember the club would have club oval races on the lake just out side the bar 2 times a yr. yeah can u imagine the pile of paper work insurance teams of lawyers and wavers that would require now.

Our club has had several races, snowcross and ovals on ice. Insurance is very expensive. Probly over 2 Grand now. I remember it being around 1800 at the time, and we haven't had one in 5 years. We would recoupe that through racers fees. Insurance was the easy part, and I don't think it was for the racers, was for fans. Racers needed to sign a waiver. It was setting up the course, which means stakes, snow fence and tons of straw bales, stands, tent for food and refreshments, heat for tent, computer to run race programs, announcer, people to hold flags and organize racers, port-a-potties, garbage cans, etc, etc, etc! It was an incredible amount of work, and we never made much money off of it. Thought was to have an event for local fans but not enough people showed up. Tried to make money off of entry fees and food sales, and the biggest kick in the face was the racers. They have all that money tied up in sleds, trailers, trucks and gas to get to the track, and they also brought there own food and refreshments and never spent any money in the tent. It was either charge more at the pit entrance or quit, and the fact all the work was in the dead of winter and cut into our riding time, we decided to quit.

Definitely a long shot but it’s fun to think about the prospect of this race returning. Many would say it was the most famous race in snowmobile history. The race had a tremendous amount of coverage on TV and in the newspapers.

In the 70’s, the MN DNR would loan out 16mm black and white films of prior year races. These were extremely well done, ran about 45 min, and were fascinating to watch (lots of aerial coverage). It would be great to see aerial video of today’s machines pounding that same brick-hard, drifted Manitoba snow, undoubtedly at much higher speed.

From the race archives, the starting line in Winnipeg at -47 (without the wind chill):

I think it's pretty funny that the Arctic Cat in the foreground is registered and licensed. You could take it out on the trail after the race.

While I am sure there would be many obstacles to overcome, Brian already runs the USXC Cross Country circuit and they have many races around my area, including the Red Lake Nation I-500 near Thief River Falls, so I think they already have the liability insurance covered, the border crossing could be a problem, getting permits to race in the ditch in Manitoba may be a problem, but they already run some races in NW MN in the ditches, on the trails, and on area rivers and lakes.

When I was younger we would get out of school and follow the race, I was in Winnipeg three times for the start, followed the sleds to Crookston the first day a few times, one year the race stopped in East Grand Forks for the night (my home town), and we followed them to Walker a couple of times. My older brother raced it a couple times, and my younger brother raced in the mid 90's. I had many friends and classmates that ran the race, Useldingers, Enrights, Simonsons, Seydels, and many others from Grand Forks and East Grand Forks. Roger Janson and Dale Cormican were from Crookston, 25 miles down the road. I don't think it could ever be as big as it was but it would be great to see them try.

Skiroule, sleds are faster today but in the early 70's they were reaching speeds of 90 to 95 MPH on the dike in Morris, MB and on some of the roads near Walker but in the ditches the suspension held them back. Also the sleds had to be registered some years to run the race.

It looks like the race is on for next winter, it will run February 11th from Winnipeg to Thief River Falls, February 12th from Thief River Falls to Bemidji, February 13th from Bemidji to Alexandria, and finish up on February 14th from Alexandria to Willmar. The entry forms are available online already and there are lots of different classes. It should be a lot of fun to follow next winter.

I will do it. I've been told I need a Yamaha with power steering to pull it off. Kip? Sponsorship?

I did see that if you start in Winnipeg and finish in Willmar on a Yamaha they will pay your entry fee. You should do it PR1

They have a 50 and older class

Polarisrider1, that's funny you should ask that! I have a young man who we will be sponsoring and he's all signed up for the Yamaha Race promotion and he will be riding a 2015 SRViper RTX with the factory race package!!! I like the idea that they are getting back to production sleds like they did in the old days. Race sleds should be production sleds, not custom built by the factories!!! This gives the privateer a change to race and be competitive. Furthermore the customers can relate to what's on the race tracks!!!
