any one been to Rome in January?thinking of buying tix this week for wife's big 40 for Jan 15.I know it is winter then but I am not afraid of cold.who has been thinking of 3 days Rome then driving south like maybe Naples for 2 days and driving back to Rome 6th day .who has been what did you do.besides stock up on sleeping pills for a 16 Hr flight

Been there(Rome), great city but I was not there in the winter. I would stay clear of Naples only go there to get on the shuttle boat to go out to the Island of Capri. Naples is known for muggers so if you do go there remove ALL jewelrey and watch your wallet and your wifes purse. Oh the drivers there are crazy not a fun place to visit.
Venice is really nice but again I haven't been there in winter and the drive between there and Rome is cool.
Where are you flying out of? Going from Chicago O'Hare its a 10hr flight there and about 8hr back with a good tail wind.

The flying can be brutal. It would not be so bad with a direct flight. She would appreciate it more if you can find a simple flight schedule without changing planes. Those little layovers add up the hours pretty quick and you do not get to see much from the inside of an airport. Pick your airline based upon Rome. It is all about the connecting flight.
Do not worry about the weather. Their worst day is about the same as our mellow days here. The upside of Winter is that things will be much less crowded.

I have no direct flights the best I have from MN is delta msp to Amsterdam 1.5 hr layover.back I was thinking of taking the 11.5 hr layover in Amsterdam and hit the city and get real mellow before the 9hr flight home.I also talked to a bud who took the train from Rome to the Swiss alps. seed it was a great train ride and the alps were gorgeous. I think it would be unbearable torture to see all those snow covered hills to climb and not have a way to high mark them.so maby Capri
Spend no less than 3 days in rome. We stayed in Belgium and flew in to rome in the summer for less than100 per ticket so flying from rome somewhere might be cheap. I have been on the eurail through the alps in switzerland and austria and it was worth it to me. I have all kind of tips for rome if interested.
SOunds like a good time - my best advice is to buy a Rick Steves or equivalent travel book. We were there 2 years ago and went by the suggestions in the book. It is about $25 and well worth it. My aunt was stationed in Naples, her supperior described Naples as "Look at the drapes, dont look at the floor" the place is dirty, traffic bad... Pompei was great, we also took a weekend north to Assisi, very nice. It's all what you guys like to do.
OK so what is the vote stay in Rome for all 6 days. or get out for a few days for a drive any place but Naples.I would like to see Mt Vesuvius would you stay there or just see the highlights and keep rolling?we both like driving around and scoping out things.some weekends we just load up the dogs and head out on some back roads if it gets late just find a motel.keep in mind we only have 6 days looks like I could stay bizz in Rome the whole time.but I would like to take at lest 1 trip to the coast even if I drive back to Rome that night.so best long day trip?or overnight trip
Go to Rome and Florence, you can take the rail, it is very easy and comfortable that time of year. It will be cold that time of year. Kind of like San Francisco or Seattle. The train ride up to Venice isn't too bad either. You could just buy her a new sled for her 40th and have good time up north!
Just spent 6 weeks in Italy this spring, 5 on business and my wife flew over for the 6th week for vac. We did the rail thing and were at Florence, Venice, and Rome. Florence was beautiful, Venice was unique, but smelled like fish, Rome was fantastic but a very busy city. The monuments and building were breathtaking where ever we went. It is mindblowing to think that these things were built 1000 to 2000 years ago and are still standing. And add to that the construction is so precise......how did they do that? During the business part of the trip we had Sundays off and we were able to go to Pisa, the Alps, and the Med coast, what a beautiful country. Any place you choose to go, I am sure you will enjoy it....have fun and be safe!
Amsterdam is a great airport for stopovers. When checking flights try a round trip from the US to Amsterdam and use a local European discount carrier for the round trip from Amsterdam to Rome. I did this a couple of weeks ago for a trip to Germany. I saved over $500. I use Air Berlin, German Wings etc.
Be prepared for crazy, near lawless driving. I enjoyed it but my wife wasn't real excited about it. One driving tip, when coming to an intersection or when someone is trying to merge ahead of you, dont look them in the eye, if you do they will assuredly take your spot/cut you off. Driving was the most exciting part about the trip for me. Will remind you of the UP trails on New Years weekend.

I would not waste the time doing just half a day in Amsterdam. It is not enough time to justify the layover. It takes time to figure out what to see and how to get there. Spend at least one night and enjoy the city.
The driving is a blast if you like the thrill. The cities-buildings are amazing. Take time to really find out the history. Is it possible to spend more than a single week over there? One week leaves you pretty tired even if you get into the right sleep pattern the first day.

I was in Italy last sept.. Went to Rome, Venice, and Florence. I was on a Globus tour and everything was taken care of. I would highly recommend it if its your first time there. Driving in Rome is CRAZY, worse than chicago and N.Y. because besides the cars the scooters! Something like a million of them in rome and no law or it seems like it. I don't think you can go wrong going to any of these cities. If you are short on time don't waste your time going to the leaning tower of piza. The tower is great but its the only thing in that city. Have fun!
I will be in Rome this Januaury from the 5th to the 9th. It's our extra stop on the way back from a friend's wedding in Sri Lanka. Somehow it was cheaper to add a flight to Rome and back to London then to just stay in London for a couple days. My girlfriend is doing most of the planning for the trip, but we already have flights and hotels booked for it. Should be a good time, even if it is 'cold' and the off season.
Well I pulled the trigger last night going from a sat to Mon so it will be a nice long week.not bad pricing like 1500 for air and hotel.thinking on getting a car for just a few days I will be sure to get some picks of me in a tiny clown car.the upgrade was a ford festiva so I guess I get a go-cart for $100 + bucks a day.

Most of the cars are just barely go-karts. You will fit right in. Clutch and shifter all the way. Need a smiley icon.
If the sightseeing tours offer the English headsets, get them. It generally means that little info cards at each station do not have the full interpretation in English. Most places will also have info books or guides in English. If you do not see them, just ask.
Start doing your research on the sights now. It will amaze you how much there is to see. Knowing a little in advance will allow you to soak it in better.
