I have a 1999 xc 700 that starts up and runs great then will giving gas maybe ten minutes into the ride the motor just quits like you hit the kill switch or turned the key off but then will start right back up. Does anyone have any ideas?

I had a yammi yrs ago that did that it was the oil pump took a dump. I was shocked it did not melt but it would run for 5min then die let sit a bit and would run for 5 min sled made home like 1o mi.figured out oil pump was going out.premixed gas sled made another 2000 mi with no work then sold.premix some gas and run it just to see.worst thing that can happen is you run extra oil for a bit and get dripping out of pipe for a bit

that could be another possibility, my dads buddy bought a 99 xc 700 brand new and the oil pump took a dump on him after 2 years. THe oil pump on my sled (99 xc 700) was replaced too but I do not know the reasoning.

will motor idle if you let it sit for a while or does it shut off, are you going fast when it dies? if you are flying down the trail or field- it could be plugged fuel filter that won't let enough fuel through at high rpm's, could be a plugged fuel tank vent- where the pump can't suck because of a vacumn, try with gas cap loose or open..could be a ton of things including an ignition component. if it dies then restarts right away and will sit there and idle, i would look into a fuel supply problem first

hard to say without experiencing your problem in person, This might sound weird but,, my 97 had a problem, it would intermittently die or bog, but would restart and run fine, it turned out to be the spark plugs were causing the problem, mine originally came with champion plugs(from the factory), but all the other sleds I had I always used NGK spark plugs, so when it came time to buy replacement plugs I bought NGK's and used them, it turns out thats when my problem started and by chance while I was on a trip and experiencing this problem and fouled out the plugs, I didnt have any spark plugs so I got some from a buddy(he had the oe champion plugs that my sled came with), after putting the champion plugs in, the sled ran great and even sounded different. I never had another problem again. I have only heard of two dealers that I have gone to that know about this problem, they told me that the NGK spark plugs, cause the ignition modules to go out of whack, they told me that if your polaris came with champion spark plugs use champion, if they came with NGK, use NGK.
like I said, I dont know if this is your problem or not, but it might help

I totally agree with "wilson". Sounds like fuel tank vent or filter. Don't forget to make sure your fuel valve is all the way open.

still not working

Thanks to everyone for the responses. I changed the fuel filter, checked wire connectors and then I started it up with a spark tester to make sure I was getting good spark. It sat and ran in idle and there was no problem. I rev'd it up and it sounded great so I tried moving the wires under the motor thinking if the stator wires are grounding out it would die but it kept running so I took it out to try it. After about five minutes it died so I tried to start it with the pull cord but it wouldn't hardly move. I Fiinally got it to move and got it to start up. Died once more before I got it back to the garage. I'm thinking the oil pump is shot.

You mean the rope wouldn't move meaning it was seized?

Another possibility is the thermostat. It could be stuck shut causing it to die when warmed up. Super easy to replace. I just tore apart my 99 xc 700 tonight and my thermostat looked like this

toast

pull the recoil check if the belt is on , or if you can turn the water pump , if the belt is off you have been running it with no oil

Your water pump belt runs the oil pump and if it breaks you have no oil and no coolant flow! Pull your recoil housing off and check it before anything.
