Thousands of tons each day? Please link the facts. I know that it lands on my boat to the tune of a couple ounces over a three day visit to Harbor View Marina in Ludington. About the same as the coal fired power plant dumps on me at Grand Haven. What’s the side effect from this coal suet?

It is actually coal ash. The ceo of the company claims it is harmless. I must agree. This morning at the marina.

MANITOWOC, Wis. (AP) - The S.S. Badger car ferry is off and running for another season on Lake Michigan.

Owners say it's the only coal-fired steamship in operation in the United States. But, that might have to change in the near future if the ship wants to continue to operate between Ludington, Mich., and Manitowoc.

Environmental Protection Agency regulations will ban the Badger from dumping coal ash in Lake Michigan at the end of next year. The ship dumps the ash waste during its trips across the lake. The Badger generates nearly 4 tons of ash from 55 tons of coal per day during its 5-month season.

The EPA says the water and ash mixture isn't hazardous, but the agency was ordered to regulate vessel discharge under the Clean Water Act.

WLUK-TV ( http://bit.ly/mhEDeK) says the Lake Michigan Carferry Service will have to research, invent and design a new way for the Badger to operate in order to stay in business after December 2012.

This one sentence embodies why so many people think the politicians and bureaucrats in DC are working against them instead of for them. Unnecessary regulation just to say they're doing something "for the environment".

The EPA is out of control. There is new regs for fuel systems on small boats and outboards(big polluters?) a fuel line for a small Yamaha outboard with a bulb is going up to 129.99, I think they were about 40.00. Also onboard fuel tanks have to have new filter systems and no vents, the boat manufacturers tell me it is going to add at least 300.00 to the price of a new boat, slso I/O's need catalytic converters now, and they are trying to make them mandatory on outboards in a few years. Does that ferry really use 55 tons of coal per day? Than sounds like a lot to me.
